The Pactola North Boat Ramp is scheduled to close from Oct. 5, 2026, through Jan. 31, 2027, for work extending the ramp 70 feet. Parking lots, the vault toilet and shoreline access are reported to remain open, but visitors cannot use the North Ramp to launch boats during construction.
When is the Pactola North Boat Ramp closed?
A Forest Service-sourced recreation alert reproduced by OuterSpatial gives the closure period as Oct. 5, 2026, through Jan. 31, 2027. News Radio KOTA reported that the closure took effect at 5 p.m. on Oct. 5. The stated end date is the expected schedule in those notices; check current agency information before traveling in case dates or access conditions change.
What remains accessible during construction?
The alert reports that parking lots, the vault toilet and shoreline access remain available to the public. That does not mean boats can be launched from the North Ramp: the ramp itself is closed. Follow posted signs and stay outside the construction area.
Why is the ramp closed?
The project is described as extending the ramp by 70 feet. KOTA attributed the access restriction to the Black Hills National Forest’s safety concerns about heavy equipment and active work zones. The restriction applies to the North Boat Ramp, not necessarily to every area around Pactola Reservoir.

Is the South Boat Ramp open as an alternative?
Its availability during this project has not been confirmed in the current notices cited here. Earlier South Dakota Department of Transportation notices said the South Ramp was unaffected during separate Highway 385 work, but those notices concern different projects and do not establish current access. Check the latest Forest Service or South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks information before setting out to launch at another site.
