What should you power during an outage?
Start with a short list of essentials and the length of outage you want to prepare for. Ready.gov advises prioritizing which items to plug in; a home should not assume it can run every appliance at once. Consider communications, lighting, and any equipment your household depends on, then choose backup equipment that matches those loads.
There is no universal generator size, battery capacity, or outage duration that suits every home. The official guidance cited here does not establish one. Check the actual requirements of your equipment and plan around your household’s needs.
Phones and basic lighting
Charge phones and other small devices in advance, and identify alternative ways to charge them. Keep a power bank available for communications and battery-powered lights for illumination. Ready.gov recommends battery-powered lights rather than candles during an outage.

Continuity for selected equipment
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) uses converters, switches, and energy storage to maintain power to a load when its input power fails, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. It can provide continuity for selected electronics or equipment; the definition does not mean whole-home backup, and the department’s cited page gives no household runtime guarantee. Match the UPS to the equipment and the time it needs to remain powered.
Temporary power for selected household loads
A portable generator can supply temporary electricity, but plan for the specific loads it will serve rather than assuming it can operate the whole home. Before an outage, review the generator’s rated output, fuel needs, maintenance instructions, safe placement, and permitted electrical connection. Follow the manufacturerโs manual and local rules.

Solar panels and stored power
Solar panels alone do not necessarily keep a home powered when the grid fails. The Department of Energy explains that photovoltaic (PV) systems generally shut down during an outage for safety. A solar system paired with battery storage and configured to island from the grid can continue supplying power. Confirm that the system has those capabilities rather than assuming that grid-connected panels will work during an outage.
How to choose an emergency-power setup

How do you safely run a generator?
A portable generator belongs outdoors. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to operate it at least 20 feet from the home and buildings, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors, and vents. Never operate one inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed placeโeven with windows or doors open. An open garage door, fan, or open window does not make indoor use safe. - Choose an outdoor location. Place the generator at least 20 feet from the home and other buildings, directing exhaust away from windows, doors, and vents, as CPSC advises in its May 27, 2026 hurricane-season guidance.
- Follow the product instructions. Read and follow the generatorโs labels and manual, maintain it as directed, and consider a generator with a carbon-monoxide (CO) shutoff safety feature. CPSCโs 2026 guidance notes that wet weather creates shock risks; the manufacturer may require a rated, noncombustible generator tent or advise waiting until rain or snow passes.
- Keep CO alarms operational. CPSC recommends battery-operated CO alarms or alarms with battery backup on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas; interconnected alarms are best. Review the CPSC carbon-monoxide guidance.
- Respond immediately to a warning. If a CO alarm sounds or you suspect CO poisoning, get outside immediately and call 911.
The stakes are significant: in its January 23, 2026 winter-safety release, CPSC reported an average of about 100 U.S. consumer deaths per year from carbon-monoxide poisoning caused by portable generators. This is the agencyโs reported average, not a count for 2026. See CPSCโs winter generator-safety release. Do not use a fuel-burning appliance to heat a home during an outage.

- List the essential equipment and devices your household needs to keep powered, and decide how long you want to support them.
- Charge devices in advance; keep a power bank, battery-powered lights, and working CO alarms ready.
- If you plan to use a generator, learn its operating and maintenance instructions and identify a safe outdoor location at least 20 feet from the home.
- If you have solar panels, confirm with the system provider whether the setup includes battery storage and can island during a grid outage.
As CPSC Acting Chairman Peter Feldman put it in the agencyโs May 27, 2026 release: โAmericans should prepare now because the safest time to act is before the power goes out.โ
