PCL Construction announced on October 5, 2026, that it had become the Anishnabe Alliance’s first Friendship Belt Patron, formalizing a relationship that began with support for a cabin-building project in Maigen-Ajik, Quebec. PCL says the project raised $38,500 and is being built by Algonquin youth in a carpentry skills training program.
How the partnership began in Maigen-Ajik
According to PCL’s October 5, 2026 announcement, the company and industry partners raised $38,500 for a cabin-building initiative in Maigen-Ajik. Algonquin youth enrolled in a carpentry skills training program are building the cabins, with facilitator support from the Rapid Lake community. Maigen-Ajik is an Anishinabeg community in Quebec’s La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve.
PCL’s release describes Maigen-Ajik as having about seventy residents, no electricity and no running water. Those details and the project’s funding and implementation account come from PCL; the available Alliance pages corroborate the patron relationship but do not independently document project results.
Christine Poucachiche, a Maigen-Ajik community member quoted by PCL, said: “This great initiative serves as a dual purpose, building skills while addressing housing needs!”

What a Friendship Belt Patron relationship includes
The Anishnabe Alliance describes Friendship Belt as its highest support level. PCL says the name refers to wampum belts historically used to seal relationships of respect between nations. Its announced patron support includes:
- Support for the Alliance’s core operations and impact initiatives.
- Co-development of two in-community experiences.
- Participation in the Alliance’s Annual General Assembly.
The Alliance’s Our Sponsors page lists PCL in the Friendship Belt tier. The Alliance also lists the relationship on its PCL Construction project page. The published descriptions establish the tier and its stated commitments; they do not provide a contribution amount or a performance measure for the patron role.

What the Anishnabe Alliance does
The Anishnabe Alliance describes itself as a First Nations Indigenous-led non-profit working with Algonquin (Anishinabeg) communities and individuals in Quebec and Ontario. Its areas of work include economic development, education and training, housing, and sports and leisure. PCL’s announcement says the Alliance was founded in October 2025.
Nona Vincent, the Alliance’s founder and director and a member of the Rapid Lake Anishinabe community, described the sequence behind the partnership this way: “Most partners start with a logo and promise action later. PCL did it the other way around,” adding, “That is the kind of relationship our communities need: one measured by what gets built, not by what gets announced.”

What PCL says the formal commitment is meant to do
Mathew Baranowski, PCL Construction’s Ottawa district manager, said: “What our team learned in Maigen-Ajik is that the community sets the priorities and we bring the tools. Becoming a Friendship Belt Patron is how we make sure that wasn’t a one-time project,”
That statement frames the patron role as continuity after the cabin initiative, with the Alliance’s operations, impact initiatives and community experiences included in the announced commitments. PCL’s release describes the company as operating in Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and Australia, with 100% employee ownership and annual construction volume of $13.8 billion CAD; those are company-provided profile details, not independent assessments of the partnership.
