What streets are included?
The project has two main components with different limits and types of work:

Louisville Metro describes the boulevard conversions as the project’s first construction phase. The two-way work is separate from the Ninth Street redesign, which the city says remains in final design.
Why is Louisville redesigning the corridors?
The city’s stated aim is to make Ninth Street a stronger connection between Downtown and West Louisville instead of a physical barrier. Louisville Metro also says the project is intended to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders while accommodating vehicle and freight travel.

Other stated goals include creating space for non-vehicular travel, adding active public spaces, supporting economic vitality, and improving access to parks and recreation. Street trees and stormwater management are also among the project purposes. These are aims, not evidence of results already achieved.
When is construction scheduled?
Schedule information differs across Louisville Metro’s sources. A recent city announcement scheduled the start of the Muhammad Ali and Chestnut/River Park two-way conversion work for October 7, 2026, weather permitting. The project page, last updated July 23, 2025, had said that conversion work began in summer 2025 and was expected to finish by summer 2026. Those timelines cannot be treated as a single, confirmed current schedule.

The same project page said the Ninth Street corridor was in final design and expected to be completed by fall 2028. That is the city’s published expectation, not a guarantee. The available information does not clarify whether the newer conversion start reflects a schedule change, another phase, or a project page that was not updated. Check Louisville Metro’s current project information before relying on a field-work date.

The project page links to roadway concepts and public-realm renderings, but the available published information does not establish final lane allocations, a block-by-block cross-section, or exact specifications for public spaces. It also does not establish specific business-access changes, transit-service changes, detours, or parking impacts. Those details should be confirmed through current city plans and construction notices rather than inferred from the project’s general goals.
