How to Keep Your Home Warm and Safe With a Fireplace This Winter

Use your fireplace more safely this winter: arrange an annual professional inspection, keep combustibles at least three feet away, burn dry seasoned wood, and respond promptly to indoor smoke.

To use a fireplace more safely this winter, arrange a professional inspection before the heating season, keep combustible items at least three feet away, burn dry seasoned wood, and maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. If smoke enters the room, stop using the fireplace and address the venting problem with a professional. An open fireplace can feel warm nearby but may draw heated air out of the house, so do not count on it as an efficient whole-home heater.

How often should a chimney be inspected?

Arrange a professional inspection of the fireplace, chimney, and venting system every year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) both recommend annual professional attention; cleaning or repairs should follow the inspector’s findings. A quick look by a homeowner is not a substitute for an inspection by a qualified professional.

Schedule the inspection before regular winter use, when there is time to address needed service. EPA’s Burn Wise pages, which provide this advice, are a historic record and have not been updated since October 30, 2025; follow local fire-code requirements and the appliance manufacturer’s instructions as well.

How far should furniture be from a fireplace?

Keep furniture, firewood, decorations, and other things that can burn at least three feet from the fireplace. For an open fireplace, place a glass or metal screen in front of the opening to help stop sparks and embers from escaping. These are USFA recommendations; check the appliance manual and applicable local requirements for any additional precautions.

What wood is safe to burn in a fireplace?

Burn dry, seasoned firewood, not household waste. EPA recommends firewood with a moisture reading of 20% or less and advises never burning garbage, plastic, or pressure-treated wood.

A firewood moisture meter can help check whether wood is dry enough. It does not dry the wood: seasoning and keeping firewood properly stored are still necessary. Follow the meter’s instructions when taking a reading.

What should I do if smoke comes into the room?

Indoor smoke is a warning sign, not something to accept as normal fireplace operation. EPA says smoke can point to wet wood, inadequate airflow, or a maintenance problem with the appliance or chimney. Stop using the appliance and take these steps:

  1. Open a window.
  2. Make sure the flue is open.
  3. Carefully check the venting system.
  4. Contact a professional installer or chimney sweep to identify and address the cause.

Do not resume use while the smoke problem persists. If you cannot safely check the venting system, leave that work to a professional.

How do smoke and carbon monoxide alarms fit into fireplace safety?

Keep smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the home, as USFA recommends in its heating-safety guidance. Install, test, and maintain each device according to its manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local requirements.

Does an open fireplace heat a home efficiently?

Usually not. An open fireplace may warm people close to the hearth while the chimney draft pulls heated indoor air out of the home. EPA describes wood-burning fireplaces as generally inefficient for heating. If you are considering a retrofit or replacement, compare the options against your space-heating needs rather than assuming a fireplace will heat the whole house.

What to compare before upgrading

  • Heat output and efficiency: Consider how well the appliance can heat the size and layout of the space you want to warm. Real-world performance depends on fuel moisture, operation, and installation.
  • Emissions and local rules: Check the appliance’s emissions information and any local air-quality requirements.
  • Fit and installation: Have a qualified professional assess whether an insert or replacement suits the existing firebox and venting system, and what installation work is needed.
  • Fuel and operating costs: Consider available fuel and the cost of operating the appliance.
  • Outage operation: Check whether the system depends on electricity, particularly if you want heat during a power outage.

EPA identifies fireplace inserts and other cleaner, more efficient heating appliances as possible alternatives. An EPA-certified wood heater is a specific appliance designation; it is not interchangeable with EPA’s separate “qualified” designation for fireplaces. Confirm the exact category and installation requirements when comparing products.
