Illinois Department of Transportation plans to add temporary rumble strips before an Ogle County construction zone after seven crashes in 12 days, according to a WTVO report updated October 7, 2026. The report does not say when installation will happen or identify the exact work-zone limits.
What safety measure is IDOT planning?
WTVO quoted an IDOT statement saying the agency plans temporary rumble strips in both directions before the work zone, at the locations of advance warning signs with flashing beacons. The strips are planned measures; the report does not establish that they are already installed or give an installation date. WTVO’s October 7 report carries the agency’s statement.
Where is the construction zone?
The report locates the incidents in an Ogle County construction zone but does not provide a sufficiently precise road segment or work-zone limits. It does not establish that the site is on I-39, so drivers should not rely on that assumption to identify the location.
What is known about the crashes and their causes?
WTVO reported seven crashes since September 24, 2026, citing Monroe Township Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Richard Wilson. The report also describes a recent collision in which a minivan struck the rear of a semi-truck’s I-beam; Wilson said the minivan driver had bumps, scratches and refused treatment. These are details from the news report, not an independently reviewed crash log.

Wilson said the district believed distraction and the construction were linked to the incidents. That is a local official’s assessment, not a formal finding about the cause of each crash. Resident Daniel Abbott told WTVO he had seen close calls and drivers approaching merging traffic quickly; that is his observation, not a measured trend.
Wilson also told WTVO that Monroe Center had recorded 14 crash responses that year and called the recent increase “astronomical” for the rural district. WTVO described Monroe Center as having about 400 residents. Those figures and characterization are attributed to the report and Wilson.

How should drivers proceed through a work zone?
IDOT says work zones can bring changing conditions, stopped traffic and worker exposure. Its driver guidance emphasizes that distraction and speed are leading causes of work-zone crashes statewide. The agency’s advice is practical:
- Put away devices and keep your attention on the road.
- Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
- Stay alert for changing traffic patterns and conditions. IDOT puts it simply: “Pay attention – conditions can change quickly.”
- Leave more space around heavy vehicles; do not follow closely or cut in front of them.

What do Illinois work-zone statistics show?
IDOT’s 2024 Illinois Crash Facts & Statistics recorded 6,186 work-zone crashes statewide, including 15 fatal crashes and 972 injury crashes. IDOT reported 15 people killed and 1,337 injured in work-zone crashes that year.
IDOT defines a work-zone crash as one in which the first harmful event occurs within a work zone, or on an approach to or exit from it, and is related to movement through the zone. Workers do not have to be present for a crash to count. These statewide 2024 figures provide context; they do not verify the reported Ogle County incidents or establish what caused them.
