The pause also affects sediment sampling in one case. It is not a dismissal, a finding of fault, or an order halting CP2 construction.
Why are the state lawsuits paused?
Callan Marine, the dredging contractor, filed a federal marine exoneration and limitation-of-liability proceeding on April 28, 2026. In late July, U.S. District Judge James D. Cain Jr. ordered related spill litigation paused, Verité News reported. In August, the judge also halted sediment sampling that had been ordered in the Pig and Rooster case.
The stay order’s exact text was not available in the sources reviewed. The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana docket listing confirms the federal case and its filing date, but its listing retrieved May 12, 2026 may not include later orders: In re: Callan Marine Ltd., 2:2026cv01362.
A pause in litigation and evidence gathering does not decide whether the spill caused the claimed harm. Verité News reported that the state plaintiffs may still pursue damages against Venture Global and other defendants, though the timing is unclear.

Which lawsuits and plaintiffs are affected?
Verité News reported that the pause applies to three Louisiana state suits:
- Pig and Rooster Oyster Farm: Filed in November 2025. Owner David Sorrells said the delay in inspections and testing could make it harder to document what happened.
- KCM Farms, which sells oysters as The Oyster Ranch: Filed in June 2026.
- Twenty seafood-industry plaintiffs: Commercial fishers, fishing guides, and seafood processors filed suit in July 2026. Cameron Parish Port is also named in this case.
Callan Marine and Venture Global are among the parties named across the litigation. The plaintiffs allege damage to oysters, catch, equipment, or infrastructure; those claims have not been established as court findings.

What does Callan Marine’s federal limitation case do?
Callan asked the federal court to limit its financial responsibility to $60 million, which Verité News described as the value of its dredging vessel, the General Arnold, on the day of the incident. That is a requested limit—not a court-approved cap or a ruling that Callan is liable. Callan’s filing denies liability for damages, losses, or injuries related to the incident.
The federal proceeding concerns whether Callan can limit its exposure under the Limitation of Liability Act. It is separate from the state plaintiffs’ claims against Venture Global and other defendants. Callan’s petition listed 64 potential claimants, according to Verité News.

The plaintiffs’ attorney, Cooper Fournet, filed notice of his clients’ claims in the federal case on September 24, 2026. Fournet told Verité News he expected the stay to remain until a January 2027 claims deadline. That was counsel’s expectation as reported October 6, 2026, not a confirmed prediction of when the court will lift the pause. Fournet said the notice mattered because, without filing it, his clients’ claims might not exist in the limitation action.
What happened during dredging, and what losses are alleged?
Verité News reported that in August 2025 Callan Marine was dredging to enlarge shipping channels around CP2 for tanker access. While moving dredged material to a permitted storage site in Cameron Wildlife Refuge, the company spilled thousands of cubic yards of sediment into a channel near Calcasieu Lake. Reported impacts and party estimates are not equivalent to an official loss assessment or a finding of causation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is this the same case as the FERC challenge to CP2?
No. The spill litigation concerns alleged damages, causation, and Callan’s request to limit liability. A separate case challenged federal authorization of the CP2 LNG terminal and CP Express pipeline. The D.C. Circuit denied petitions challenging FERC’s authorization on August 25, 2026; that decision did not resolve the spill claims or Callan’s limitation case.
