The planned enclosed spaces will house an MSU Spartan Dairy Store and an as-yet-unnamed restaurant with an outdoor patio; both are expected to open in June 2027.
What construction is planned at Flint Farmers’ Market?
Uptown Reinvestment Corporation (URC), the nonprofit owner of the market, announced the project on October 6, 2026. About one-third of the existing outdoor vendor stalls will be repurposed as two enclosed commercial spaces intended for year-round use. The work also includes reconfiguring and expanding the loading docks and storage facilities. The Flint Courier News reported the announcement, and WNEM independently reported the core schedule and scope.

The announced dates are targets, not guarantees. The announcement says the two businesses are expected to operate during and beyond the market’s regular hours, giving visitors options outside the usual market schedule.
Why are loading docks and storage included?
The market says shared storage and product-handling space is at capacity, making access difficult for vendors. Manager Karianne Martus said, “Our storage area has become overcrowded, limiting accessibility for our vendors.” The loading and storage upgrades are intended to improve access and operational efficiency for more than 50 vendors and Flint Food Works entrepreneurs.

How is the project funded?
The announcement names the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) as funding supporters. The Mott Foundation grant record lists $3.5 million for Flint Farmers’ Market enhancements for the period January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027.
The grant record also describes multifunctional features such as food-truck areas, a centralized bar, a music stage, games, community tables and a fire pit. Those are elements in the grant’s project description; the October announcement instead highlights the two planned businesses and the restaurant patio. It does not confirm that every grant-record amenity is part of the currently announced buildout.

Where is the market, and when can you visit?
The market’s official website lists its address as 300 East First St., Flint, MI 48502, and regular hours as Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. It describes the market as year-round, with more than 50 indoor vendors and additional outdoor vendors. Check the market’s website before traveling because hours and venue information can change.
URC President Tim Herman told The Flint Courier News that the market receives about 500,000 visitors annually. That is an approximate figure attributed to Herman, not an independently audited attendance count.

What was announced at the October open house?
The public open house was scheduled for Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. near the pavilion entrance. URC and Spartan Dairy Store representatives were to show renderings and answer questions, with complimentary ice cream offered while supplies lasted. The event date has passed.
