Crews marked a major construction milestone at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum on October 6, 2026, by ceremonially placing an iron Survivor Tree atop its FOREWORD addition. The topping-out ceremony marked completion of the project’s iron-work phase, KOCO reported.

What construction milestone did the Museum reach?

The milestone was the ceremonial placement of an iron representation of the Survivor Tree at the top of the FOREWORD addition. It is a project feature—not the living American elm at the Memorial—and KOCO reported that the ceremony marked the end of the iron-work phase. No named official comment about the October 6 ceremony was established in the report.

The living Survivor Tree survived the April 19, 1995 bombing and is recognized by the Memorial as a symbol of resilience. The iron tree’s place atop the addition connects the construction project to that symbol while remaining distinct from the surviving tree on the grounds. The Memorial’s Survivor Tree information describes the living elm and its significance.

What is the FOREWORD addition for?

FOREWORD is intended to improve the Museum’s arrival and orientation experience and support educational and public programming. The Museum describes it as an addition of more than 10,000 square feet. Planned features include:

  • An expanded lobby and orientation gallery
  • A Civics Lab for student groups
  • A film studio for recording oral histories
  • Glass elevators
  • Salvaged materials from the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building

The University of Oklahoma’s Gibbs College of Architecture described the expansion as a $15.8 million project. That figure is the project budget, not a measure of construction completed. Architect and Gibbs College dean Hans E. Butzer explained the design intent in January 2026: “We will be expanding outwards, moving out from the historic building closer to the street, to better engage the public, to be more welcoming.” The University of Oklahoma’s project coverage published that statement on January 23, 2026.

When is FOREWORD expected to be finished?

KOCO reported on October 6, 2026, that completion was expected by April 2027. That is a reported projection, not a guaranteed completion or opening date; the Museum’s construction-progress page does not state a finish date. Construction schedules can change as work continues.

Is the Memorial Museum open during construction?

Yes. The Museum says the Memorial and Museum remain open during construction, while warning that work may sometimes be loud and asking visitors for patience. Check the Museum’s construction-progress and visitor information close to your visit, since access arrangements may change.

The National Park Service lists the outdoor Memorial as open 24 hours a day, every day, at 620 N. Harvey Ave., Oklahoma City. For current Museum visiting details, use the Museum’s own visitor information rather than assuming construction access will remain unchanged. The National Park Service visitor page provides the outdoor site information.
