Why the hacienda added guest lodging
The project description says the hacienda had hosted social events and religious celebrations throughout the year. Its gatherings included film events, brand launches, documentaries and graduations, alongside celebrations connected with the Jesuit church and an altarpiece dedicated to the life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The lodging was planned for people attending events, including guests, godparents and couples. These details describe the project’s stated context; they are not an independent historical account of the church or its altarpiece. ArchDaily en Español’s project description provides the event and religious context.
What was renovated
The commission included maintenance in parts of the complex, facade work, bathroom renovations and roof repairs. The description also says the work used traditional repair techniques, restored a regulated color palette, and addressed facades, walls, architectural details, vaults, transitions and paths linking different parts of the hacienda.

The guest-room intervention was placed in the first bay, described as lying between the calpanerías—worker housing characterized in the project account as typical of the Puebla region—and the reservoir area and Jesuit nave courtyard. The work is presented as a series of targeted interventions across the complex, rather than a single comprehensive rebuild. ArchDaily en Español’s account of the intervention describes these repairs and locations.
How Gasthof Amalucan uses existing spaces
The lodging program reconfigures an older space in the family courtyard and a guest cabin overlooking the church nave. The project description names this program Gasthof Amalucan. It frames the guest rooms as an extension of the hacienda’s existing event use, providing accommodation for attendees rather than presenting lodging as an unrelated new use.

The design account says scenarios were developed in an academic setting, with the owner family participating in project reviews. That context does not establish that every future scenario considered was built. The project description summarizes its approach as “urban-architectural acupuncture” guided by silence and authenticity; the statement is attributed to the project description, not to a named individual.
