The Fondation Beyeler’s expansion is a museum-and-park ensemble, not a replacement for Renzo Piano’s existing museum. It adds three buildings by Atelier Peter Zumthor—the Wyss Museum, Ammann Pavilion and Erlen Gatehouse—alongside restored historic structures and a larger area of parkland. The foundation describes the project as bringing art, architecture and nature into closer relation.
What is part of the expanded ensemble?
The existing Renzo Piano museum remains in place. Zumthor’s three new buildings add distinct functions, while restored historic buildings provide further spaces for visitors and activities.

| Building or space | Role in the ensemble |
|---|---|
| Wyss Museum | Three-storey museum providing approximately 1,500 square metres of exhibition space, according to the Fondation Beyeler. |
| Ammann Pavilion | Public lounge during the day and venue for cultural events in the evening, as described by the foundation. |
| Erlen Gatehouse | Supports logistics. |
| Restored historic buildings | House an art-education atelier, music salon, project space, and an orangery with a greenhouse and plant shop. |
| Historic park and outdoor artworks | Extend the visitor experience beyond the museum buildings; new outdoor artworks complement works already in the park. |
The foundation presents the ensemble as a combination of artworks, buildings, gardens and people, with visitors able to move between indoor and outdoor settings and between active and more relaxed uses. That is the institution’s account of the project’s intended experience, rather than a measured outcome.
What is distinctive about the Wyss Museum’s architecture and materials?
The Wyss Museum is planned across three storeys with approximately 1,500 square metres of exhibition area. The Fondation Beyeler says locally sourced Jura limestone is used in several forms: as the principal component of the rammed façade, as terrazzo flooring, as solid stone for benches and staircases, and as refined plaster on interior walls. Large-format windows frame views of the surrounding landscape. The foundation’s September 10, 2026 project release describes the area and material approach.

How does the design respond to the park?
The museum’s Y-shaped floor plan was designed around existing trees, including a century-old ginkgo, a giant sequoia and a group of plane trees, according to the Fondation Beyeler’s Art, Nature & Architecture page. The museum park directly adjoins a protected landscape area. These details describe the site relationship; they do not by themselves establish specific environmental performance or conservation outcomes.
The historic park is an English landscape garden created around 1830 and is heritage-listed. The expansion opens land that was previously private to visitors, and the foundation says its parkland will almost double. It has not published an exact area for that increase in the cited project information.
Why were three smaller buildings chosen?
The Fondation Beyeler says an international jury unanimously selected Atelier Peter Zumthor’s proposal following a study competition involving eleven architecture practices. Its stated rationale emphasizes three smaller buildings with distinct functions and material qualities, sensitively placed in the historic park, rather than a single large complex. This is the foundation’s account of the selection and its reasoning, published in its September 10, 2026 release.

The foundation lists a gradual opening period from September 26, 2026 to January 14, 2027. During that phase, visitor numbers are limited and the ensemble is not open every day of the week; regular daily opening is expected from January 2027. The opening exhibition, “Constellations,” is scheduled to run across the museum buildings and the park from autumn 2026 to autumn 2027, with some seasonal changes. Check the Fondation Beyeler’s current visitor information for the latest arrangements before planning a visit.
