The company attributes the supply to renewable power sourcing and waste heat recovery systems (WHRS). The claim concerns electricity—not all energy used at the plant, carbon-free cement production, or a measured emissions reduction.
What UltraTech reported at Kukurdih
In a 28 September 2026 announcement, UltraTech said the integrated Kukurdih Cement Works had covered its full electricity requirement with green energy each month from April 2026 onward. The announcement does not state the plant’s electricity consumption, the renewable-versus-WHRS split, or a plant-specific emissions reduction. UltraTech Cement’s announcement is the primary source for the milestone; S&P Global’s 29 September 2026 report independently describes the facility and announcement, but does not constitute an audit of the plant’s electricity data.
About the Kukurdih facility
Kukurdih Cement Works is an integrated cement unit in Chhattisgarh. UltraTech says it was commissioned in 2024 and has installed grey cement capacity of 3.3 million tonnes per annum. That capacity figure describes the facility’s installed production capability, not its actual annual output.
How the electricity is supplied
UltraTech attributes Kukurdih’s green-energy coverage to renewable power sourcing combined with WHRS. Waste heat recovery systems capture heat generated during industrial processes and use it to produce electricity. The company has not published a Kukurdih-specific proportion for renewable electricity versus recovered-heat electricity, so the two sources cannot be apportioned from the announcement.

UltraTech also says it is progressively deploying battery energy storage systems across its manufacturing network. It does not identify a Kukurdih-specific storage installation or supplier. Storage can help manage when electricity is available, but it does not by itself establish the source or emissions profile of the power used at this particular plant.
Where Kukurdih sits in UltraTech’s wider progress
The company described the milestone as part of a broader shift across its Indian manufacturing network. Since April 2026, nearly a third of its 76 Indian manufacturing units had green-energy use above 50% of their electricity requirements; five units, including Kukurdih, were above 95%.

As of Q1FY27, UltraTech reported 1,897 MW of captive green-energy capacity. It said this comprised 1,463 MW from renewable sources—solar, wind and hybrid—and 434 MW from WHRS. These are company-wide capacity figures, not Kukurdih-specific capacity or a measure of electricity consumed at the plant.
UltraTech’s stated company-wide targets are an 85% green-power share by 2030 and 100% by 2050. These are future targets, distinct from the company’s reported monthly electricity result at Kukurdih.

What the milestone does—and does not—say about emissions
Meeting an electricity requirement with green energy is not the same as running every part of a cement plant on renewable energy. Kukurdih’s announcement does not establish that all process heat or other production energy is renewable, that cement made there is carbon-free, or that the plant achieved a particular reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions. No Kukurdih-specific avoided-emissions figure was provided, so one cannot be calculated from the electricity claim alone.
The distinction matters because cement production includes energy uses and emissions beyond purchased or generated electricity. The announcement is evidence of UltraTech’s reported electricity coverage at one unit, not a complete account of the unit’s operational or product carbon footprint.

Company context
UltraTech’s Energy Management page describes green energy as part of its broader energy strategy. A 13 December 2023 company press release quoted Managing Director K. C. Jhanwar saying, “Green energy is a key enabler of decarbonization.” That earlier statement provides company context; it was not a quotation about the Kukurdih milestone.
