University of Melbourne spinout R2Crete has secured $750,000 in pre-seed funding from the University of Melbourne Genesis Pre-Seed Fund and Uniseed. The funding is intended to support a pilot commercial plant, commercial-scale validation of its waste-concrete recycling process, and material for industry trials.
What R2Crete makes from waste concrete
R2Crete’s patented process is designed to recover two materials from waste concrete: recycled aggregates and supplementary cementitious material (SCM). SCM can be used in place of some ordinary Portland cement in new concrete, while the recovered aggregates are intended for reuse as aggregate in concrete production.
R2Crete says its SCM has been tested against Australian and international performance standards. The company also says its recycled aggregates absorb less moisture than other recycled aggregates, a property that may allow higher replacement levels of virgin aggregate. These are company descriptions; the funding announcement says the pilot is intended to validate the technology at commercial scale.
What the $750,000 funding will support
The University of Melbourne’s 30 September 2026 announcement says the pre-seed capital will help construct a pilot commercial plant, validate the process at commercial scale, supply material for industry trials and develop industry partnerships. R2Crete Managing Director Warren Overton described the pilot’s goal as demonstrating that recycled aggregates and cement-replacement products can be produced reliably, cost-effectively and at scale.

- POWERFUL CRUSHING PERFORMANCE – Crushes up to 8–10 tons of concrete per hour, reducing material to 2 inches or smaller for use as backfill, gravel driveways, and other construction applications.
- LOWER DISPOSAL COSTS – Recycle concrete directly on the job site and save up to 75% on disposal and hauling costs, helping maximize project profitability while reducing waste.
- EASY TO OPERATE – Designed with user-friendly controls, this attachment can be operated by virtually any trained crew member, improving job site efficiency and minimizing downtime.
- DURABLE & HIGH-PERFORMANCE DESIGN – Features replaceable carbide bits for extended service life and consistent crushing performance, even in demanding construction environments.
- SKID STEER COMPATIBILITY – Built for hydraulic systems with a flow range of 16–26 GPM and a maximum operating pressure of 3,000 PSI, making it compatible with many skid steers and compact loaders.
The funding is for a pilot and validation effort, not evidence that commercial-scale output or performance has already been established. The announcement reports that the process can recover up to 75% of cement in waste concrete and claims a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions while retaining traditional concrete performance characteristics. Those figures are technology claims in the announcement, not independently reported results from completed commercial-scale trials.
When are the pilot and field trials expected?
The University of Melbourne reported on 30 September 2026 that pilot construction was expected to be complete by late 2026, with field trials expected to start in early 2027. The Concrete Institute of Australia repeated that anticipated schedule on 6 October 2026. These are forecasts in the sources, not confirmation that construction has finished or trials have begun.

For concrete producers and project owners, the practical question is whether the recovered materials can be supplied consistently and perform in real mixes at useful replacement levels. The pilot is intended to move the process toward that commercial-scale validation and provide materials for industry trials; the available announcements do not yet provide trial results, a confirmed product specification, or a head-to-head comparison with other cement-replacement materials.

- 【High Crushing Efficiency】Features a 9-hammer rotor to create dense impact force for consistent output, individual hammers can be replaced for long term use.
- 【Controllable Output Size】Includes a standard 15mm (0.6in) screen to regulate crushed material size, supports continuous operation and direct reuse of processed materials.
- 【Easy Mobility】Built with movable wheels so one person can transport the machine, works well within narrow job site spaces.
- 【Safe Independent Control】Equipped with a separate electric control box fitted with start stop and emergency stop buttons to simplify operation and raise safety levels.
- 【Convenient Maintenance】Adopts a quick-open protective cover, allowing simple screen and hammer disassembly and replacement to reduce maintenance time.
- R2Crete must demonstrate reliable production of its SCM and recycled aggregates at pilot scale.
- Industry trials can assess how those materials perform in concrete mixes under specified conditions and replacement rates.
- Commercial suitability also depends on consistent feedstock and supply, cost, and the performance requirements of the intended application.
For now, the concrete industry announcement is about funding and the next validation step. Its stated recovery and emissions figures should be read as claims associated with the technology, while the expected construction and trial dates remain projections.
