In an October 5, 2026 report, the Albion Recorder said the project coordinator expected work in the area to be complete by mid-November at the latest, weather permitting; that was a forecast, not confirmation of completion.
Austin Avenue and North Eaton Street: what was finished and what remained
North Eaton Street
Much of North Eaton at Austin Avenue had been paved, curbs were in place, and traffic was moving on both sides of the intersection. North Eaton north of Austin, toward Family Fare, was nearly complete, with pavement markings and permanent signs still to come.
South of Austin, toward downtown and down the hill, another asphalt layer and finishing work remained. The October 5, 2026 Albion Recorder report describes work as ongoing at the end of September, rather than confirming a finished roadway.
Austin Avenue water main and paving sequence
The new water main had been installed along Austin Avenue from Arthur Street—behind Michigan’s Family Chiropractic, about a block west of the North Eaton traffic light—east to the flashing light at North Superior Street. Crews had replaced water services on the north side of Austin and were working on the south side.

Connections at Arthur, Clinton, and Superior streets still had to be made before paving could proceed. After those connections, crews still needed to prepare the road and place a concrete base. Wightman project coordinator Brian Holleman, PE, said the base had to cure for seven days before asphalt could be placed. The report said he expected work in the area to be finished by mid-November at the latest, weather permitting.
How the other Albion project areas stood
Bemer, Magnotta, and Dean
The Bemer, Magnotta, and Dean project was substantially complete and open to traffic, with permanent signs still outstanding.
Dean and Hoaglin drives
Much of the underground utility work on Dean and Hoaglin drives was complete, but storm sewer and sanitary lateral work continued. Dean near Cooper Court was still a rough construction surface during the newspaper’s weekend drive through the area. Completion of underground work therefore did not mean the road surface was finished.
Businesses remained open, with access affected
Albion 1 Stop, at 217 Austin Avenue, and I’M TIRED, at 220 Austin Avenue, remained open during construction. The report said construction affected access and customers. In August, Albion 1 Stop’s owner told the newspaper that some regular customers had stopped coming during the work. I’M TIRED owner Mark Clawson addressed Albion City Council about the effect on his business on September 8.

As reported from a city town hall, engineers explained that water-project funding covers pavement disturbed to reach the water main, generally beneath one side of a street. Resurfacing the remaining roadway requires separate road funding.

Getting to Family Fare during construction
Some drivers heading to Family Fare used North Superior rather than turning onto Austin Avenue and passing through the North Eaton construction. The report noted that alternate routes were becoming familiar just as some original routes began reopening. It did not provide an official, complete detour map, so these observations should not be treated as current routing guidance.
