All eight lanes of I-75 through the widening corridor in Fayette County were expected to reopen by the end of October 2026, according to KYTC as reported by WKYT on October 6. That was a forecast, not confirmation that the lanes had reopened. Other major work—including projects on Newtown Pike and New Circle Road—will continue after the I-75 work is expected to finish.
When is I-75 expected to reopen fully?
WKYT reported on October 6, 2026, that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) expected the I-75 widening project to be complete by the end of October, with all eight lanes reopened by then. The report does not establish that the reopening has happened. KYTC had previously said in an April 14 release that the $89 million widening was slated for completion in fall 2026; the later end-of-October timing is the more specific forecast. What does the I-75 project include?
The widening adds a fourth lane in each direction along the corridor between Newtown Pike and the Southern Split. KYTC’s project description also covers improvements to the Paris Pike and Newtown Pike ramps. The agency said the referenced I-75/I-64 segment is projected to carry 130,000 average daily vehicles by 2040; this is a future traffic projection, not a current count. Which other Lexington road projects are still underway?
Finishing the I-75 work will not mean construction across Lexington is over. WKYT reported that Newtown Pike work continued, Euclid Avenue paving had wrapped up, and the city’s public works page listed more than two dozen current projects affecting drivers. The number is attributed to WKYT’s October 6 report, not a separate count here.

KYTC lists four major Fayette County capacity projects under Driving Lexington Progress. Its April 2026 release described the initiative as a $168 million investment; a separate KYTC project listing describes it as $170 million, so the figures reflect different agency descriptions rather than one exact total. The four projects are:
- I-75 from Paris Pike to the southern I-64/I-75 split.
- I-75 from Newtown Pike to Paris Pike.
- Newtown Pike from New Circle Road to I-75.
- New Circle Road.

New Circle Road
KYTC’s New Circle Road project page describes improvements from Leestown Road toward Georgetown Road and lists an estimated construction completion of summer 2027. That is a separate posted schedule, not part of the I-75 forecast. KYTC advises motorists to slow down, avoid distractions, obey speed limits, heed warning signs, and drive carefully around crews. What are drivers and businesses experiencing?
WKYT’s October 6 report included individual accounts, not a representative survey or a measured estimate of travel-time effects. A shop owner said construction had affected foot traffic but not overall business. Delivery driver Jerry Hayden described work zones and rush-hour traffic as frustrating, and urged drivers not to rush through construction. These accounts illustrate varied experiences; they do not establish a citywide impact.
