Lesprom Network reported that U.S. softwood lumber imports rose 11% in August 2026, while the average import price fell 1.1%. Its accessible report excerpt does not identify the comparison period or the data series behind either figure, so the percentages cannot be read confidently as month-over-month or year-over-year changes.
What the August figures establish
The October 6, 2026 Lesprom Network headline reports an 11% expansion in U.S. softwood lumber imports in August 2026 and a 1.1% decrease in the average import price. The excerpt does not show whether the import change is measured against July or August 2025, whether it refers to import volume or value, or how the average price was calculated. These are reported figures, not independently verified official softwood-lumber statistics. Lesprom Network’s report
Without the underlying series and comparison base, the two percentages do not show how many board feet or how much dollar value entered the country, nor whether the price decline and import increase occurred against the same period or measure.
How the figures fit—and do not fit—broader trade data
Official August totals cover all imports
The U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that total U.S. imports of goods and services were $420.8 billion in August 2026, up 4.3% from July. Goods imports were $342.2 billion. Those figures cover broad national trade categories; they do not confirm the softwood-specific 11% increase. Census Bureau and BEA August trade release

- Versatile Applications: These wooden sticks and lumber take paint, stain, and other embellishments well. Short lengths work well for many projects - from DIY decks to framing
- Pre-Cut and Pre-Sanded: The lumber comes pre-sanded and pre-cut to 12 inch sizes with less than a 1/64 inch tolerance, saving you time on cutting, sanding and measuring. For smaller than 12 inch pieces, you can easily cut them
- Quality Construction Material: Made from beautiful, quality Douglas Fir wood - only the best for woodworkers and DIYers. These boards are cut and prepared in the USA
- Sustainably Sourced: All of our wood comes from sustainable forests, ensuring that every tree is replaced and regrown for future generations
Wood-product trade is broader than softwood lumber
A Congressional Research Service report using 2024 data put U.S. imports of wood products at $23 billion, with $11 billion—nearly half—from Canada. “Wood products” is a broader category than softwood lumber, and these annual figures should not be treated as an August 2026 lumber total. What the classification and origin context can tell you
A U.S. Department of Commerce Federal Register notice identifies softwood lumber coverage through HTSUS subheadings 4407.1100, 4407.1200, 4407.1300, 4407.1400 and 4407.1900. The notice says that Brazil, Canada, Germany and Sweden each supplied at least 1% of U.S. softwood lumber imports by quantity during July–December 2024. That historical six-month finding is not a ranking or origin breakdown for August 2026. Federal Register notice

Why the reported rise cannot be attributed to tariffs or demand
The figures available here do not identify an explanation for the August movement. They do not establish that tariffs, construction demand, housing activity, or shipments from a particular country caused imports to rise. Making any such connection would require the underlying monthly series and supporting evidence.
The Canada–U.S. softwood lumber dispute includes antidumping and countervailing duties. Global Affairs Canada describes its 2026 administrative-review figures as preliminary or post-preliminary; those figures do not take effect until final results. A duty rate for a particular shipment depends on the applicable U.S. Department of Commerce determination and its scope, so preliminary review figures should not be presented as operative rates. What to check before using the 11% figure
For a construction buyer, supplier, or analyst, the next step is to establish what the percentage compares before using it in a forecast or procurement decision. The underlying table should identify:
- Whether August is compared with July 2026 or August 2025.
- Whether the measure is quantity, value, or both.
- How the average import price is defined and what period it is compared against.
- Whether the data are total imports or broken out by country of origin.
Until those details are available, the sound conclusion is limited: Lesprom reported an August increase and a separate average-price decline, but the accessible figures do not resolve their bases or explain the movement.
