The City of Ferndale says the change was coordinated with organizers because reconstruction on West Nine Mile Road is expected to begin in spring 2027, overlapping the event’s usual downtown location and timing.
Why did Ferndale Pride move to August?
The city says the festival’s usual date falls during the planned construction period and its West Nine Mile footprint is within the project area. Moving the event to August is intended to preserve its existing footprint while avoiding a conflict with construction. Ferndale Pride executive director Julia Music told WXYZ-TV Detroit that organizers and the city developed an alternative plan after learning the project could affect the event timeline. WXYZ-TV Detroit reported Music’s comments.

Ferndale Pride describes itself as a free-to-the-public LGBTQIA+ festival in downtown Ferndale, with more than 220 vendors and three stage areas. The official event homepage provides the current overview.
What road construction is planned on West Nine Mile?
The City of Ferndale announced the West Nine Mile Reconstruction Project on September 28, 2026. The project covers West Nine Mile Road from Woodward to Pinecrest and is planned to begin in spring 2027. The city anticipates some downtown disruption during spring and summer, with detours potentially required. The city’s project announcement says the road has not been repaved since 1998 and gives the repairs an expected service life of 20 to 25 years.

What the date change means for downtown businesses
Businesses that plan around the festival’s traditional date may need to adjust. Elizabeth McMullen, general manager of Pops for Italian, told WXYZ-TV Detroit that the 2026 festival was the restaurant’s busiest day in its history and that Pride typically brought three times the customers of a normal Saturday. Those are McMullen’s reported observations, not an audited measure of event-wide attendance or economic impact. WXYZ reported that 187 booths and three stages had been planned for June 5 before the date change.

Ferndale Pride’s FAQ says admission is free and notes that the festival has a free water-refill station. It recommends sunscreen and hydration and describes a Sensory Station with ear plugs and fidget items. Bike parking and MoGo are listed as ways to get there without driving. Check the FAQ and local travel information closer to August for current transit, parking, accessibility, and route details; the FAQ’s MoGo coupon code PRIDE2026 is for 2026 and should not be assumed valid for the 2027 festival.
