Those figures are intraday snapshots, not confirmed closing returns. The article linked the group’s gains broadly to investment in AI infrastructure and defense, but the available evidence does not establish that this caused each stock’s move or identify a company-specific catalyst for all five.
What happened to the five stocks
StockStory, in an article carried by WAOW/MarketMinute on October 6, 2026, reported the following intraday gains:
| Company | Ticker | Reported intraday gain |
|---|---|---|
| Sterling Infrastructure | NASDAQ: STRL | 6.1% |
| Quanta Services | NYSE: PWR | 4.7% |
| Herc Holdings | NYSE: HRI | 2.3% |
| Construction Partners | NASDAQ: ROAD | 3.8% |
| Nextpower | NASDAQ: NXT | 5.2% |
The percentages describe trading during the day, not verified closing performance. The article also noted new highs in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. It presented investment in AI infrastructure and defense—including power systems, data-center construction, and grid buildouts—as a broad explanation for the group’s rise. That is the article’s framing, not proof that those themes triggered each individual gain. StockStory/WAOW MarketMinute, October 6, 2026
Why these businesses may be grouped together
The five companies have different roles in infrastructure-related markets. Their businesses provide context for the sector narrative, but they are not interchangeable and the shared theme alone does not establish a direct AI or defense revenue connection for every company.
#1 Best Overall
- Sterling Infrastructure does large-scale site development and electrical and mechanical work through its E-Infrastructure Solutions segment. The company describes customers and projects spanning data centers, semiconductor fabrication, manufacturing, distribution, warehousing, and power generation.
- Quanta Services provides services for electric-grid, power-generation, and other mission-critical infrastructure projects.
- Herc Holdings rents equipment; its reported recent growth included activity on mega projects as well as a larger fleet following the H&E acquisition.
- Construction Partners was categorized in the same-day article as a construction and maintenance services company. The available reporting does not provide a company-specific explanation for its October 6 gain.
- Nextpower was categorized in the article as a solar technology company. The available reporting does not establish a specific October 6 catalyst for its shares.
What recent company results show—and what they do not
Sterling Infrastructure: fast growth with acquisition contribution
Sterling’s August 3, 2026 second-quarter release reported revenue of $1.17 billion, up 90% year over year, and said acquisitions contributed $250.8 million of that quarter’s revenue. Sterling also raised its 2026 guidance. At quarter end, mission-critical projects—including data centers, manufacturing, and semiconductor facilities—represented 92% of E-Infrastructure backlog. That percentage applies to the segment’s backlog, not all company revenue or total backlog. These results offer business context; they do not identify the cause of the October 6 share move. Sterling Infrastructure, August 3, 2026
Quanta Services: growth, backlog, and raised expectations
Quanta’s July 30, 2026 release reported second-quarter revenue of $9.56 billion, compared with $6.77 billion in the second quarter of 2025. GAAP diluted earnings per share were $2.96, versus $1.52 a year earlier; adjusted diluted EPS was $4.24, versus $2.48. Total backlog stood at $53.4 billion, and the company said it raised its full-year 2026 expectations across metrics. Management cited customer investment in the electric grid, power generation, and mission-critical infrastructure. These are operating results and management’s outlook, not confirmation of a same-day trading catalyst. Quanta Services, July 30, 2026

Herc Holdings: rental growth alongside fleet expansion
Herc’s July 28, 2026 release reported second-quarter total revenue of $1.204 billion, up 20%, and equipment-rental revenue of $1.072 billion, up 23%. Adjusted EBITDA was $487 million. The company raised guidance for equipment-rental revenue, adjusted EBITDA, and rental capital expenditures. Herc attributed revenue growth to a larger fleet after the H&E acquisition, increased volume on mega projects, and revenue synergies. The growth figures should be read in that context; they do not explain the October 6 share gain. Herc Holdings, July 28, 2026
Construction Partners and Nextpower: no verified individual catalyst
The same-day article reports ROAD’s 3.8% intraday gain but does not establish a company-specific October 6 trigger. The available Nextpower investor-relations results index lists fiscal 2026 quarterly materials, but it likewise does not establish what prompted NXT’s reported move. A broad infrastructure or energy theme should not be substituted for evidence of a particular catalyst. Nextpower investor relations

What investors can reasonably conclude
The defensible takeaway is limited: a market-news article reported gains across five stocks and attributed the group’s strength broadly to infrastructure investment themes during a session when major indexes reached new highs. Recent results from Sterling, Quanta, and Herc show business momentum, but they predate October 6 and cannot establish what drove trading that day. For Construction Partners and Nextpower, the cited reporting does not identify an individual catalyst. The figures also do not establish closing returns, relative valuation, risk, or expected future performance, so they are not a basis for ranking the five stocks as investments.
