Tame That Slope With These 6 Landscaping Solutions

Terraces, planted erosion-control approaches, hardscape, paths, lighting, and well-matched plants can address different challenges on a sloped yard.

A sloped yard can become easier to use and maintain, but the right fix depends on what is making it difficult: runoff or erosion, too little level space, hard-to-navigate access, or planting challenges. Six practical approaches are terraces, erosion-conscious planting, retaining and hardscape features, paths and steps, lighting, and plants chosen for local conditions. They are general design ideas—not a verified recreation of an original six-item article or an engineered plan for a particular site.

1. Build terraces to create usable level areas

Terracing breaks a slope into flatter areas that can support planting, seating, or other yard uses. ShrubHub’s guide to landscaping slopes and hillsides describes using stone walls, timber, or retaining-wall blocks to form these levels, with paths or steps connecting them. The guide says terraces can help with erosion and drainage, but those results depend on the site and construction; a terrace is not a guarantee against either problem.

Think through how people will move between levels before choosing where each terrace goes. The layout should account for the slope, intended use, and how water moves across the yard. The guide offers general ideas rather than structural or drainage specifications.

2. Cover exposed soil with erosion-conscious planting

Where bare soil is the main concern, planting and temporary erosion-control materials may be more appropriate than reshaping the whole yard. ShrubHub names ground covers, mulch, contour planting, and jute netting or erosion-control fabric for newly planted areas. These are options to consider, not universal solutions: the guide does not establish that any one plant or fabric will stabilize every slope.

Match plantings to the site’s sun exposure, soil, and water needs. On a recently planted area, jute netting or other erosion-control fabric can be considered as part of the installation, rather than as a substitute for suitable planting or drainage planning.

3. Use retaining and hardscape features where they fit

Retaining features can define level changes, while hardscape elements can make a hillside more usable. ShrubHub suggests boulder walls, stone stairs, dry creek beds, and patios incorporated into terraces. These elements serve different purposes: a stair route improves access, a patio provides a place to use the yard, and a dry creek bed is a landscape feature to consider where water flow is part of the design. The guide does not provide engineering details or guarantee performance.

A documented example from Fine Gardening’s reader-photo feature shows garden designer Jan Johnsen’s approach: a mortared stone retaining wall with semicircular bluestone stairs, a landing, and wide, curving grass steps on the remaining slope. It illustrates one site-specific design, not a standard detail to copy without considering local conditions.

4. Make movement across the grade easier

Curved paths, garden steps, and stairs with landings can connect different parts of a sloped yard. ShrubHub also suggests handrails on steep sections. Consider the route people will actually use and whether it needs a landing or a handrail; a decorative path alone does not establish that a route is safe or suitable for everyone.

Johnsen’s Fine Gardening example combines a stone stair route with grass treads to accommodate the hillside’s remaining grade. It shows how a design can use more than one kind of route, but the feature does not supply measurements or construction specifications for other properties.

5. Add lighting as a visibility and design feature

ShrubHub recommends considering lighting around paths, stairs, retaining walls, and specimen plants. Its examples include solar path lights and recessed stair lights. Lighting can make route edges and landscape features more visible after dark, but it cannot compensate for poorly planned or constructed stairs, paths, or retaining features.

6. Choose plants for the site, not just the slope

ShrubHub lists creeping juniper, daylilies, lavender, sedum ‘Autumn Joy,’ muhly grass, and Vinca minor as examples for sloped landscapes. These are the guide’s examples, not universal recommendations. Suitability varies with climate, sun, soil, and water conditions, so group plants according to what they need and consider native or drought-tolerant options where appropriate.

How to choose a starting point

  • Runoff or exposed soil: Consider planting, mulch, contour planting, and erosion-control material for newly planted areas. The sources provide no quantified performance comparisons.
  • Not enough usable space: Explore terraces, with paths or steps planned between levels.
  • Difficult access: Consider a route using paths, stairs, and landings; assess whether a handrail is appropriate on steeper sections.
  • Planting or upkeep feels difficult: Select plants to fit the actual sun, soil, and water conditions rather than relying on a generic list.
  • Several problems overlap: Combine planting, access, and hardscape ideas around the site’s needs. The available guides do not provide site-specific drainage or structural plans, so complex work may call for a qualified professional’s assessment.

There is no supported cost or performance ranking among these approaches. The original article suggested by the title could not be identified, so its six solutions, publisher, date, and geography are unknown; the six sections here are general options supported by the sources below.
