Why You Should Bury Banana Peels in Your Backyard Soil—and Why Composting Is Better

Burying banana peels is not an instant fertilizer: decomposition takes time, may temporarily use soil nitrogen and can attract animals. Composting is usually the better route.

Burying banana peels can eventually add organic matter and nutrients to soil, but it is a slow process—not an instant or complete fertilizer. Peels may temporarily tie up nitrogen as they decompose, and scraps can attract animals or pests. For most gardens, composting the peels first is the more reliable choice.

What burying banana peels actually does

Banana peels contain nutrients, including potassium, but plants cannot use them simply because a peel is placed beside a plant. Soil organisms must break the peel down first. Until then, its nutrients are not readily available.

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension gives a qualified estimate of “up to 5 weeks or more” before decomposition reaches a stage where nutrients are being added. That is not a guaranteed timeline: conditions and the peel itself can affect how quickly it breaks down.

As microbes decompose food scraps, they use nitrogen. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources and UF/IFAS caution that this can temporarily leave less nitrogen available to plants. A peel is also not a balanced fertilizer, and the Royal Horticultural Society notes that most garden soils already contain enough nutrients to support healthy growth.

Direct burial versus composting

Consideration Burying peels in garden soil Composting peels first
Nutrient availability Delayed until the peel decomposes; it is not an immediate fertilizer. Finished compost provides decomposed organic matter and nutrients plants can use.
Breakdown Slow; UF/IFAS estimates “up to 5 weeks or more” before nutrients may be added, not a universal timetable. Chopping or tearing peels helps them break down faster. A whole-pile composting time cannot be treated as a peel-specific timeline.
Nitrogen Microbes decomposing the peel may temporarily use soil nitrogen. Peels break down as part of a managed mix of compost materials.
Animals and pests Buried scraps may be dug up or attract wildlife; shallow burial is especially inviting. Food scraps may attract flies or larger pests, but burying them within the compost pile can reduce attraction.
Effort and setup Simple and inexpensive, especially in an empty planting area, but does not make a quick, balanced fertilizer. Requires collecting scraps and allowing them to compost. A bin is optional, though it can help contain materials and maintain pile dimensions.

Why composting is usually the better option

North Carolina Cooperative Extension warns that peels break down slowly in soil, may attract pests and potentially harbor mold, and do not release nutrients for immediate plant use. It recommends composting them; once fully decomposed, the peels contribute organic matter and nutrients in a form plants can use.

The Royal Horticultural Society likewise recommends composting banana skins and suggests chopping or tearing them to speed decomposition. Finished compost can improve soil’s ability to hold water and nutrients, according to University of Nevada, Reno Extension. Composting also lets you add peels as one ingredient in a broader soil amendment rather than relying on them alone.

Geobin Compost Bin - 246 Gallon, Expandable, Easy Assembly, Made in the USA, Outdoor & Backyard Composter
  • Large capacity—expandable to 3.75 feet (237 gallon)
  • Easy to assemble with closure keys. Easy to move. Easy to reassemble.
  • The best value composting bin on the market.
  • Excellent ventilation.

You do not need a dedicated bin to compost. If you do use one, it can help contain materials and manage the pile. To reduce pest attraction, bury food scraps within the compost pile instead of leaving them exposed.

If you still want to bury peels directly

  • Use peels rather than assuming guidance for peels also applies to burying a whole banana. The extension guidance cited here addresses peels; a specific whole-fruit method is not established.
  • Chop or tear the peels into smaller pieces to help them break down sooner.
  • Avoid shallow placement where animals can easily find and dig up scraps. Even deeper burial does not make nutrients immediately available.
  • Do not count on peels as a complete fertilizer or as a substitute for addressing a diagnosed soil nutrient need.

Does banana-peel water fertilize plants?

University of Maryland Extension says it is not aware of research supporting banana-peel soaking as a fertilizer-strength treatment. Only very small amounts of nutrients are available from food scraps in this form; composting, or chopping and burying scraps, makes their nutrients available more efficiently. Peels alone are probably insufficient to fertilize plants.

Compost Tumbler Bin Composter Dual Chamber 43 Gallon (Bundled with Pearson's Gardening Gloves)
  • ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
  • ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
  • ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
  • ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
  • ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.

Banana water also will not make plants drought-tolerant. During hot, dry weather, water plants regularly and deeply rather than relying on peel water to help them withstand heat.
