What’s the Difference Between Laminated Timbers?

Glulam, LVL, PSL, LSL, OSL and CLT differ in what is bonded, how it is arranged and what structural form it creates. Here’s how to compare them and what to verify for a project.

“Laminated timber” covers several engineered wood products, not one interchangeable material. Glulam is made by bonding lumber laminations; LVL uses veneers; PSL, LSL and OSL use strands; and CLT is a panel made from crosswise layers. The practical differences are the wood elements, their orientation, the product’s form and intended structural role. Choosing one requires its specific grade and design values as well as the project’s loads, spans, supports, connections and exposure.

How the main laminated timber products differ

Product What is bonded together Orientation and form Common roles noted in the sources
Glulam (glued laminated timber) Selected, stress-rated lumber laminations Generally a linear member with laminations’ grain running along its length Beams, girders, columns, headers and curved members
LVL (laminated veneer lumber) Wood veneers bonded into a billet Veneer grain runs parallel to the member length Headers and beams
PSL (parallel strand lumber) Wood strands bonded under pressure Linear structural composite lumber member Beams, girders and columns
LSL (laminated strand lumber) Wood strands formed into a structural composite lumber product Linear framing member Headers, lintels, purlins, columns and rim boards
OSL (oriented strand lumber) Wood strands formed into a structural composite lumber product Structural composite lumber member Specific comparative applications are not stated in the cited AWC material
CLT (cross-laminated timber) Layers of lumber or permitted structural composite lumber Layers are arranged crosswise to form a panel Panel system; its layup and form distinguish it from linear members

Application descriptions are from the American Wood Council’s lumber headers and glulam/SCL material; product-family descriptions are also covered by its Products Primer. The sources do not establish that one category is universally strongest, cheapest or best, and do not provide like-for-like design values for ranking them.

Which products belong to the same family?

LVL, PSL, LSL and OSL are types of structural composite lumber (SCL). Glulam is also an engineered laminated wood product, but it is a distinct category rather than an SCL subtype. CLT belongs to the wider engineered wood family, but its crosswise layers make it a panel product rather than another beam variation. The AWC Products Primer and Glulam/SCL overview describe these product families.

How to choose for a project

Start with the structural job, not the acronym. A beam or header, a column, a rim board and a panel are different roles; the product’s form and published design information must suit the specified use.

  1. Identify the member’s role and geometry. Establish whether the element is a beam, header, column, rim board or panel, along with its required dimensions and shape.
  2. Use project-specific design inputs. Span, loads, support conditions, connections, exposure and the project’s jurisdiction affect selection. The product name alone does not resolve these design questions.
  3. Check the exact grade and published design values. Obtain the manufacturer’s documentation for the particular product and grade; do not infer capacity from a general description such as “LVL” or “PSL.”
  4. Verify the applicable standard and product marking. Confirm the product meets the relevant requirements and that its marking and documentation correspond to the specified member.

AWC explains that engineered wood products must meet building-code performance requirements and undergo testing and quality assurance. That general requirement does not certify an individual piece or substitute for project-specific design.

What the standards tell you—and what they do not

Glulam

APA identifies ANSI A190.1-2022 as the American National Standard for structural glued laminated timber production, inspection, testing and certification. It concerns manufacturing quality and product marking; verify the member’s own grade and published design values as well. See APA’s ANSI A190.1 information.

Rank #2
Wensilon #10 x 3 Black Lag Screws,Structural Screw,49PCS 1lbs 4.8x75mm
  • Packaging size: 49PCS #10 x 3"-inch structural wood screws, including T25 star drive drill bits. These heavy-duty wood screws are compatible with T25 drill bits for easy installation.
  • Roller thread: The roller handle design reduces the torque of drilling, making it easy to drill in and secure. The self drilling tip with threaded design can easily penetrate hardwood without cracking, without the need for pre drilling, saving you time. Self tapping cutting is easy to drill and prevents wood cracking.
  • Multi functional applications: This heavy-duty large washer head screw is perfect for indoor, outdoor, and industrial applications. The screw is perfect for various types of wood, logs, and garden beautification, deck construction, wooden frames, indoor/outdoor renovations, laminated beams, and pole sheds, providing reliable fastening links in various outdoor applications.
  • Rust proof coating: Screws are designed specifically for outdoor use, treated with rust proof and anti-corrosion coatings to ensure long-lasting performance even in harsh weather conditions. The screws are made of high-quality steel, with high strength and durability; The external coating has passed a 1000 hour salt spray test, providing excellent rust and corrosion protection, ensuring long-lasting performance and lifespan even under the harshest conditions.
  • Large washer head: The screw adopts a large washer head design, providing a larger support surface to improve stability and durability. The star shaped drive design can maximize torque, reduce protrusions, and protect fasteners and drill bits.

Cross-laminated timber

APA’s CLT selection guidance references ANSI/APA PRG 320-2025 for CLT grades and lamination criteria, including grade families based on longitudinal-layer characteristics. Consult the product’s grade and selection information rather than treating every CLT panel as equivalent. See APA’s CLT guidance.

Other engineered wood products

For any product, code acceptance and quality assurance are necessary considerations, but the broad product category is not a project approval. Confirm the precise product, grade, intended use and design documentation against the building requirements that apply to the project.

Why there is no universal “best” laminated timber

These products differ in their constituent wood elements, layup, form and common applications, so a category-wide strength or cost ranking would be misleading without comparable product grades and project conditions. AWC notes that SCL is typically more expensive than traditional sawn lumber; that statement does not establish a price ranking among LVL, PSL, LSL, OSL, glulam and CLT. Selection should follow the required structural role and the product-specific design information.
