A dehumidifier with laundry mode can help dry clothes indoors by drawing moisture from the room air, but the feature is not a substitute for an externally vented clothes dryer, adequate ventilation, or fixing a leak. Choose a unit for the room’s size, dampness and temperature as well as its laundry controls; no universal drying time or per-load cost is established by the manufacturer and government guidance cited here.

What laundry mode does—and what it does not do

Wet laundry releases moisture into indoor air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies hanging wet clothes as a source of indoor moisture, while ENERGY STAR includes laundry drying among conditions that can increase dehumidification needs. A dehumidifier removes some of that moisture from the room, helping manage humidity as clothes dry.

“Laundry mode” is a manufacturer-defined setting intended to assist clothes drying; its controls and behavior vary by model. It is not proof of a particular drying time or energy cost. For example, EcoAir lists a dedicated laundry mode on its DD1 Classic, and Meaco describes Smart Laundry mode for the Arete One range. Neither source establishes a drying-time guarantee across homes, room conditions and loads. EcoAir DD1 Classic specifications; Meaco’s laundry-mode FAQ.

A dehumidifier also does not repair water intrusion, replace ventilation or clean up existing mold. ENERGY STAR recommends reducing moisture at its source, including venting clothes dryers outdoors, using kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans, and drying clothes outdoors when no dryer is used. EPA notes that poor ventilation can allow humidity to remain high and limit the removal or dilution of indoor pollutants. Describe the air-quality benefit narrowly: controlling excess moisture can help manage humidity-related mold risk, but a dehumidifier is not a general-purpose purifier for smoke, VOCs or all allergens. Choose capacity for room size and moisture load

Start with the space you need to dry: one laundry room, a larger area, or persistently humid conditions across a home. ENERGY STAR’s U.S. buying guide bases capacity on both space size and how damp the conditions are without dehumidification. Laundry adds moisture, so a unit suited to an ordinarily damp room may be undersized for a wet room with frequent indoor drying.

The following are ENERGY STAR’s U.S. buying-guide ranges for portable dehumidifiers. They are selection guidance, not guaranteed extraction from a particular laundry load. Pints per day should not be compared directly with litres per day unless the rating conditions are also understood.

Room size and dampness ENERGY STAR capacity guidance
Small-to-medium room, slightly or moderately damp 20–30 pints/day
Small-to-medium room, very damp 25–40 pints/day
Small-to-medium room, wet conditions, potentially including high-load laundry drying 30–50 pints/day
Large room, slightly or moderately damp 30+ pints/day
Large room, very damp 40+ pints/day
Large room, wet conditions 50+ pints/day

These ranges come from ENERGY STAR’s current U.S. product guidance; check the current chart and local product ratings before buying. The U.S. Department of Energy test procedure for dehumidifiers changed in 2019, so older and newer capacity ratings may not be directly comparable. ENERGY STAR buying guide; ENERGY STAR 2025 dehumidifier messaging.

For whole-home humidity problems, a portable laundry-room model may not be the right coverage solution. ENERGY STAR says a whole-home unit may suit a humid-climate house with central air and consistently elevated humidity throughout the home; sizing and installation should be handled appropriately.

Check temperature, humidity control and efficiency

Room temperature

Temperature can affect performance. ENERGY STAR warns that below 65°F (about 18°C), frost may form on refrigerant coils and reduce compressor dehumidification. If the laundry area is a cold basement, garage or utility room, check the model’s specified minimum operating temperature and whether it has an anti-frost feature. Do not assume every compressor model will work equally well in a cold space.

Humidity target and controls

ENERGY STAR says the optimum relative humidity for a building is generally considered to be 30–50%. EPA’s home checklist advises keeping humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. Treat these as practical guidance, not a guarantee that one setting suits every building or climate. Look for a humidistat or RH display if you want the unit to control or show humidity; ENERGY STAR says certified models include a humidistat. A separate hygrometer can help monitor RH when the appliance does not display it, but it does not treat the air. EPA Asthma Home Environment Checklist.

Energy use and certification

Extraction capacity alone does not tell you how much electricity a unit uses. Compare energy-efficiency information, such as integrated energy factor where available, and check whether the exact model is certified in your market. ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional units; that comparison applies to the stated product categories, not to every model or every laundry cycle.

Compare the practical details that affect daily use

Once capacity and temperature suitability are established, compare the features that determine whether the unit will work in your laundry space:

  • Mode and airflow: Check what the manual says laundry mode changes, whether airflow direction is adjustable, and whether there is a timer.
  • Drainage: A tank is simple to use but needs emptying. A continuous-drain hose can reduce bucket handling if there is a suitable drain and the hose can be routed safely.
  • Noise and placement: Compare the manufacturer’s noise specification and consider whether the unit will run near bedrooms or occupied living areas.
  • Maintenance: Check how to clean the filter and tank, and whether the unit shuts off automatically when the tank is full.
  • Safety and installation: Follow electrical and clearance instructions, and route power cords and drain hoses so they do not create a trip hazard.
  • Regional fit: Verify voltage, model revision, warranty, service availability, certification and current stock for your country. U.S. capacity guidance and UK or European product examples are not automatically interchangeable.

Spread clothes on a rack and follow the appliance manual’s instructions for clearance and airflow. For example, EcoAir’s DD1 Simple manual says to keep the airer at least 40 cm from that model; that distance should not be applied to other units unless their manuals say so. EcoAir DD1 Simple manual.

Manufacturer examples—not a tested ranking

The examples below show why the rating conditions and regional listing matter. They are manufacturer specifications and descriptions, not results from an independent side-by-side test.

Example What the manufacturer states What to verify
EcoAir DD1 Classic (UK/European-market example) Desiccant model with laundry mode; up to 7.5 litres/day at 20°C and 60% RH; 1–40°C operating range; 2-litre tank; 300 W low mode and 580 W high mode; noise figures of 34/46 dB(A). Current stock, exact model and voltage, warranty, price and whether the stated operating conditions suit the room. EcoAir product listing.
MeacoDry Arete One 20L (Ireland/UK-market example) Meaco’s FAQ discusses Smart Laundry mode in the Arete One range, and Meaco Ireland’s 20L product listing includes laundry mode. Current model version, local listing, rating conditions, warranty and availability. Meaco FAQ; Meaco Ireland product listing.

How to decide what to buy

  1. Identify the job. Decide whether the priority is drying clothes in one room, controlling persistent humidity, or both. Consider source ventilation and moisture reduction alongside the appliance.
  2. Estimate room size and dampness. Use the applicable capacity guidance, allowing for laundry as an added moisture load.
  3. Match the operating conditions. Check the unit’s capacity-rating conditions and minimum operating temperature against the actual room.
  4. Compare controls and running practicality. Review laundry mode, humidistat, timer, noise, tank or hose drainage, maintenance and safety instructions.
  5. Confirm the local product details. Check regional voltage, certification, warranty and availability for the precise model you plan to buy.

What the available guidance cannot promise

The cited government and manufacturer sources do not establish a universal drying duration or cost per load. Those outcomes depend on the appliance, room, temperature, starting humidity, ventilation, fabric and load. The product examples are not an independent test, so they support feature and specification comparisons only—not a claim that one is the best performer.
