Construct an Upcycled Wood Gas Camp Stove: A TLUD Design Guide

A reclaimed-metal TLUD is a batch-loading gasifier, not just a can with holes. Understand its airflow, fuel and design trade-offs before building an untested prototype.

A wood-gas camp stove made from reclaimed metal is best understood as a top-lit updraft (TLUD) gasifier—not simply a perforated can. A TLUD burns a batch of dry biomass from the top down: rising gases mix with secondary air above the fuel bed and burn there. This guide explains the design principles and operating trade-offs, but it is not a validated set of build dimensions. Any particular upcycled stove assembled from them remains untested until independently built and evaluated.

What makes this a wood-gas stove?

A basic wood fire burns fuel where the flame meets the wood. A TLUD separates the process into stages: the top of a preloaded fuel bed heats and releases combustible gases, those gases travel upward, and secondary air helps burn them above the fuel. The stove is normally batch-loaded, so its behavior depends on the fuel bed, airflow and combustion zone working together.

A rocket stove is a different design approach, typically organized around a feed opening and an insulated combustion path that draws air toward the fire. A TLUD instead gasifies a batch of fuel from its lit top. The U.S. EPA’s Design Principles for Wood Burning Cook Stoves offers general principles for draft and combustion, not a tested conversion plan for a reclaimed-metal TLUD.

What the design needs to do

Keep primary and secondary airflow distinct

Primary air must reach the fuel so the batch can heat and gasify. Hot gases then need a route upward where they can meet secondary air above the fuel bed. A blocked or poorly directed path can interfere with that staged combustion. In a natural-draft stove, the flow depends on the stove’s geometry and heat; a forced-draft design uses a fan. Either way, air control affects firepower, but the available sources do not establish dimensions for this particular upcycled design.

Support draft and retain heat

The EPA recommends good draft, an insulated fire zone and airflow beneath burning fuel. It states: “Placing an insulated short chimney above the fire helps to increase draft and gives smoke, air, and fire a place to combine, reducing emissions.” This is a general design principle, not a promise that adding a chimney to any can will reduce emissions. Heat loss, restricted inlets and unsuitable proportions can all undermine the intended flow.

Match flame geometry to the pot

The flame should approach the pot closely enough to transfer heat, without contacting it in a way that disrupts combustion; combustible gases also need time to burn. These are geometry trade-offs described in the MIT D-Lab Biomass Cookstove Handbook. Pot supports and the distance from the combustion zone therefore matter as much as simply making the stove fit a pot.

Fuel, loading and tending

Use dry, compatible woody biomass

The TLUD Champion profile describes TLUD stoves as able to use a variety of dry woody biomass. Fuel size, moisture and energy content affect how a stove performs, so “wood” is not a precise specification. Pellets or chips may suit some TLUD designs, but compatibility must be confirmed for the actual stove; results from one fuel or geometry cannot be transferred automatically to another.

Load a batch rather than improvising refills

A TLUD is normally loaded before ignition and allowed to burn through that batch. Adding fuel mid-burn can change the gasification mode and destabilize combustion. The MIT handbook describes a case with variable performance and elevated PM2.5 after refueling; a separate study also found transient increases in carbon monoxide correlated with refueling. Treat a batch TLUD as a batch appliance unless a specific design has a tested reloading method.

What published tests can—and cannot—tell you

Published figures belong to the stove, fuel and test conditions that produced them. They are not performance predictions for a homemade reclaimed-metal prototype.

Tested stove or study Reported result How to interpret it
TLUD Champion; Aprovecho Research Institute test, February 2010, as reported by Engineering for Change 5 liters of water boiled from 11°C in 19 minutes using 384 g of wood pellets; 20 minutes using 368 g of wood chips Historical results for the TLUD Champion, not this proposed upcycled stove. Engineering for Change profile.
Five natural-draft TLUD configurations using two biomass fuels; Tryner, Willson and Marchese, 2014 Highest measured thermal efficiency: 42%; lowest reported emissions: 0.6 g/MJ delivered CO and 48 g/MJ delivered PM Study-specific extremes among tested configurations and fuel conditions; not general TLUD values or a DIY guarantee. 2014 study.

The study’s substantial variation by design and fuel is the important lesson for builders: a stove’s emissions and efficiency cannot be inferred from the TLUD label alone. A homemade version would need its own evaluation under defined fuel and test conditions to support comparable claims.

Planning an upcycled build responsibly

The sources establish construction principles and document a self-constructible example, but do not provide a validated, complete plan for this particular reclaimed-metal camp stove. They do not settle material compatibility, exact dimensions, stability, pot clearances or fire-clearance instructions. Do not treat a conceptual airflow layout as a finished fabrication drawing.

  • Decide whether the design is natural-draft or fan-assisted; do not assume their airflow paths or operating behavior are interchangeable.
  • Identify the intended dry fuel and batch size before settling the chamber and air-path arrangement.
  • Preserve a route for primary air to the fuel and secondary air to the rising gases above it.
  • Consider insulation, draft, pot support, flame clearance, portability, ignition, tending, maintenance and cleanliness as connected design requirements.
  • Do not claim efficiency or emissions performance without testing the completed stove with identified fuel and conditions.

The TLUD Champion is a documented self-constructible reference, including a version intended for minimal tools and locally available recycled materials. Engineering for Change reported that more than 16,000 had been distributed through an Atmosfair carbon-offset program in India as of 2014; that historical figure does not establish current availability. A finished wood gas camping stove is another route for someone seeking the concept without fabricating a prototype, but no current retailer listing is established here.

Outdoor use still requires caution

A stove intended for camping is still a combustion device. This design overview is not a complete outdoor carbon-monoxide safety protocol, and it does not establish what fire restrictions apply at a particular campsite. Check applicable local rules and use only in conditions and locations permitted for solid-fuel cooking equipment.
