On many two-stage snow blowers, power steering uses a trigger or lever to reduce drive to the wheel or track on the side you want to turn toward. The opposite side keeps driving, helping the machine pivot. Other models use auto-turn systems, so the label does not describe one universal mechanism; the owner’s manual is the authority for how a particular machine works.
How trigger-operated steering turns the machine
Steering controls are commonly mounted at the handles. On the Honda model covered by its owner’s manual, pulling the left steering lever turns the machine left, while pulling the right lever turns it right. The lever stops power transmission to the selected side, allowing the still-driven opposite side to help the snow blower turn.
Other manufacturers describe similar trigger controls. Husqvarna says its trigger control lets the operator operate each wheel or track separately. Briggs & Stratton describes a trigger that releases either the left or right wheel for tight turns; Troy-Bilt calls its implementation Touch N’ Turn trigger-controlled power steering. The precise controls and operation vary by model.
Not every power-steering system works the same way
Some machines use auto-turn steering rather than paired steering triggers. The Yard Force manual describes a system that senses the direction the operator is trying to turn and engages the drive system to assist. The description does not establish a particular internal differential, clutch, or electronic design, and it should not be taken as a description of all auto-turn systems.

- 24-INCH CLEARING WIDTH AND 20-INCH INTAKE HEIGHT – This electric snow blower can handle deep snow while its variable speed steel auger breaks up heavy snow and ice and directional chute control sends it where you need it
- CLEARS UP TO AN 18-CAR DRIVEWAY – Clear up to an 18-car driveway with 8 inches of snow on a single charge with the two included 7.5Ah ARC Lithium batteries; compatible with all EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries
- VARIABLE SPEED SELF-PROPEL – Get the job done easily with forward and reverse directions via the handle-mounted control dashboard on this EGO snow blower
- PUSH-BUTTON START – With no priming or pull cords, snow removal is easy thanks to a push-button start so you can get to work instantly; four bright LEDs increase visibility for nighttime snow removal
Steering triggers are not necessarily brakes
On the Honda model, operating a steering lever stops power transmission to the selected wheel or track; it does not apply a brake. That distinction matters: releasing drive on one side helps the machine turn, but does not mean that side is being braked or that the snow blower will stop immediately.
Honda also notes that turning may feel subtle on high-traction surfaces such as asphalt or concrete, and that additional force may be needed. Surface and operating conditions—including snow cover, slopes, and uneven ground—can affect steering feel and turn radius. Reduce speed while turning, use care as the machine’s position changes relative to you, and follow the safety directions in your own model’s manual. See the Honda operating guidance for further model-specific cautions.

What to check on a specific snow blower
When assessing a machine or trying to understand its controls, use the manual and product documentation to answer these questions:
- Does it use a pair of steering triggers, levers, or a different system such as auto-turn?
- Does the drive system propel wheels or tracks, and what does each steering control do?
- Does the manual say that a control releases drive, applies a brake, or operates some other way?
- What operating guidance does the manufacturer give for your surfaces, slopes, and turning speed?
Manufacturer pages show that trigger steering is offered on some two-stage machines, but the feature name alone does not establish identical hardware or prove that a particular model is right for every driveway.
