Start by identifying both the surface and the residue: cured super glue, sticker adhesive and tape residue need not respond to the same treatment. Try the mildest compatible method first, test it in a hidden spot, and use a plastic edge to lift softened residue rather than scraping hard.
Identify the glue and the surface first
Before using a solvent or scraper, work out whether you are dealing with cured super glue or the tacky residue left by a label or tape. Then identify the material and its finish. A method that is suitable for bare glass or metal may damage paint, varnish, plastic, fabric or a specialty coating.
Choose an inconspicuous test spot and follow the cleaner’s label. Henkel’s LOCTITE Glue Remover technical data sheet, issued 14 March 2025, specifically says to test in an inconspicuous area to check suitability. For chemical removers, ventilate and use the protective equipment specified by the product manufacturer.
Try a gentle method suited to the material
Plastic
Plastic types vary, so a successful test on one item does not establish that a different plastic is safe. LOCTITE suggests trying vegetable oil or skin moisturizer for a gentle approach. For hardened glue, its guide also suggests white vinegar and lifting with a credit card or similar edge. Test first and stop if the material changes appearance or texture.

Glass
For ordinary glass, LOCTITE suggests warm water and careful scraping; soaking in hot, soapy water can help loosen adhesive. If that is not enough, its guide names acetone or alcohol as stronger options, but says to test first. Do not apply this general advice to glass films or treated surfaces: 3M’s film-removal bulletin specifies detergent and water for its film-removal procedure and says not to use heat or chemicals on those films.
Fabric
For stubborn super glue, LOCTITE suggests gently scraping away excess, soaking the fabric overnight in cold water, then applying liquid laundry detergent and laundering. If glue remains, its guide says acetone may be tried, but warns that it can discolor delicate fabrics. Check the garment’s care instructions and test an inconspicuous area before using it.

Leather
Lift residue gently with a dull edge and try warm, soapy water first. LOCTITE’s guide mentions acetone-based nail-polish remover as a later option, with care to avoid smearing. Because leather finishes vary, test first and stop if the surface changes.
Concrete
LOCTITE describes physical removal with a dull edge and hot water. For stubborn glue, its guide also mentions ammonia mixed with dish detergent. Treat these as manufacturer suggestions, not a guarantee for every concrete finish or adhesive; test a small area and follow the cleaner’s directions.

Unpainted and painted metal
For unpainted metal, LOCTITE’s guide names acetone. For painted metal, it suggests spray lubricant and lifting with a plastic card or dull edge. Paint and protective finishes differ, so test first and follow the cleaner’s label. 3M’s general adhesive-removal steps call for ventilation and protective equipment as directed on the product.
Choose a remover for the residue, not just the surface
If gentle methods do not work, match a dedicated remover to the adhesive and material. Manufacturer compatibility claims are product-specific: read the directions and exclusions before applying anything.

These are manufacturer-described uses, not proof that either remover is safe on every item within a broad material category. In particular, do not use LOCTITE Glue Remover on painted or varnished surfaces or ABS.

Once adhesive has softened, ease it up with a plastic scraper, plastic card or other gentle, dull edge. Work gradually instead of forcing the edge under the residue. A sharp metal blade or aggressive scraping can scratch or scuff the underlying surface. Wipe away loosened material with a cloth and rinse or clean as the product directions specify.

When to stop and reassess
- The test spot changes color, gloss, texture or finish: stop and do not apply the product more broadly.
- The surface is painted, varnished, treated or covered with a film: check its specific care guidance before using solvents, heat or scraping.
- The glue is not loosening: do not compensate by scraping harder. Recheck whether the remover is intended for that residue and material, then follow its dwell-time and cleanup directions.
- You are using a chemical remover: follow its label and safety data, including ventilation and any specified protective equipment.
