What capacity is planned?
The current Sports Quarter project page and Birmingham City Council’s 2026 Central Heart Prospectus both describe a 62,000-capacity stadium. It is proposed for Bordesley Green in East Birmingham, as part of the wider Sports Quarter development. The project page and the Council’s prospectus present this as the current concept, not as an approved final specification.
A separate Council development page gives a rounded figure of 60,000 while also referring to the 2030/31 target. That is a discrepancy in public descriptions, not evidence of two different stadium options; the current project page and 2026 prospectus use 62,000. Council’s Sports Quarter page
When is it meant to open?
Birmingham City Council’s 2026 prospectus says the stadium is planned for completion by the 2030/31 football season. That is the clearest current target in the cited material, but it is not a guaranteed opening date. Birmingham Central Heart Prospectus 2026

How long will construction take?
No reviewed official source confirms when stadium construction will start or how many years the build itself will take. The project page says engagement and consultation are under way ahead of a planning application, while the Council’s January 2026 executive report records a Planning Performance Agreement and the start of the design competition and community engagement. As a result, the 2030/31 target cannot be converted into a dependable construction duration: the available sources do not give a confirmed start date. The chairman has also noted that delivery depends on factors outside the club’s control.

Why was an earlier five-year estimate reported?
In April 2024, Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner described a five-year goal from August 2024, while acknowledging the timeframe was highly ambitious and depended on others moving at the same pace. BBC Sport reported his words: “My timeframe is lunacy but we’ll look to get this completed in five years.” This was a historical aspiration, not a confirmed construction programme, and it should not be treated as a replacement for the later 2030/31 Council target.
