What Do the Aircon Symbols Mean? A Guide to AC Remote Icons

On many air-conditioner remotes, a snowflake means Cool, a sun means Heat, a water drop means Dry or dehumidification, and a fan means fan-only operation. These are useful starting points, not universal standards: icon artwork, available functions and how a setting behaves can differ by model. If an unfamiliar symbol appears, check the manual for your exact air-conditioner model.

Common air-conditioner mode symbols

Mode symbols describe what the unit is set to do. The same icon is common across many products, but check the display and manual before assuming its behavior or controls match another model.

Symbol or label Common meaning What to know
Snowflake Cool Cooling mode. Haier uses a snowflake for Cool on its ductless remote: Haier’s symbol guide.
Sun Heat Heating mode. Haier identifies the sun as Heat on its ductless remote: Haier’s symbol guide.
Water drop Dry or dehumidification Intended to reduce humidity. Samsung describes Dry as useful in rainy or humid weather; temperature and fan behavior depend on the model: Samsung’s remote-control guide and TCL’s mode guide.
Fan Fan-only operation On the Samsung models described in its support guidance, Fan circulates air without heating or cooling. It is not the same as the fan-speed setting: Samsung’s remote-control guide.
Auto Automatic operation The unit manages operation toward a desired temperature on the Samsung products described, but Auto behavior can differ by product: Samsung’s guide and LG’s remote-control guidance.

Mode symbols are different from airflow controls

Fan mode versus fan speed

Fan mode selects circulation without heating or cooling on the Samsung models described above. Fan speed, by contrast, controls how strongly air is blown while a mode is running. The available speed choices may change depending on the selected mode, and some modes may not let you set the temperature or fan speed independently.

Swing and airflow direction

Arrows, moving louvers or a swing label commonly indicate airflow direction. Some LG remotes offer separate up/down and left/right swing controls, so the icon or button can refer to a particular direction rather than all louvers moving together: LG’s remote-control guide.

Sleep, timer and other feature icons

Moon or star

A moon or star commonly marks Sleep. Depending on the unit, Sleep may adjust operation or switch the air conditioner off according to a schedule. The exact behavior is model-specific: TCL’s guide.

Clock or timer

A clock commonly indicates a timer. Read any ON or OFF label and the duration shown on the display: the timer may schedule the unit to start or stop. LG documents timer controls in its remote guidance: LG’s remote-control guide.

Key or lock

A key symbol can mean the controller’s key lock is set. Daikin’s controller guide also lists schedule and off-timer, clock, timer-disabled or reset-clock, air-purifying and centralized-control indicators. Some apply only to particular systems or optional equipment, not every household remote: Daikin’s controller-symbol guide.

Energy, health, cleaning, display and other feature symbols likewise depend on the product. An icon shown in a guide for one system may not exist on another.

How to identify an unfamiliar AC symbol

  1. Find the model number. Check the air conditioner’s product label or the documentation that came with the unit. If you have the remote but not the paperwork, use the model number to locate the product’s official support page.
  2. Open the exact model’s manual. Match the model number, not just the brand. Look for the remote-control diagram and the mode or indicator section.
  3. Check what the display says with the icon. ON or OFF, a duration, a temperature or a swing direction can clarify whether the symbol refers to a timer, operating mode or airflow control.
  4. Do not assume an unresponsive button is broken. LG notes that a remote may differ from its manual illustration and that pressing an unsupported function may produce a sound without activating it. Samsung also says displays and features vary by product model. Mitsubishi Electric advises consulting the user manual when symbols differ from its examples: LG, Samsung and Mitsubishi Electric.

Why symbols and functions vary by model

There is no single remote layout that applies to every air conditioner. Manufacturers document different controls across products, and a feature may depend on the unit or optional equipment. LG’s support page, dated 08/04/2026, states: “Different air conditioner models may support different functions and features.” Samsung likewise warns that remote displays and features can vary by product model. The manufacturer guides from LG, Samsung and Mitsubishi Electric all point readers back to model-specific documentation when an icon or mode does not match the examples.
