For a compatible metal refrigerator exterior, appliance epoxy is the best-supported paint category. The strongest documented options are Rust-Oleum Specialty Appliance Epoxy, Krylon Appliance Epoxy Spray, and BEHR PREMIUM Appliance Epoxy Spray Paint; Rust-Oleum also offers a touch-up version for small repairs. The available manufacturer evidence supports these options—not 15 distinct refrigerator-specific paints—so this guide focuses on products with stated appliance uses rather than padding a ranking with general-purpose coatings.
These recommendations are for exterior surfaces only. Check the current product label for the exact surface, preparation, application conditions, and exclusions before painting.
Which paint is right for a refrigerator?
Start with the surface and the product’s stated use. Rust-Oleum describes its Specialty Appliance Epoxy as formulated for indoor metal surfaces and names refrigerators among compatible appliance exteriors. Krylon and BEHR also identify refrigerator or metal-appliance exteriors as intended uses for their appliance epoxy products.
- For a broad exterior repaint: compare the Rust-Oleum liquid and spray formats with Krylon or BEHR spray, using the product’s current label to confirm finish, color, and conditions.
- For a small chip or scratch: Rust-Oleum Appliance Epoxy Touch-Up Paint is a brush-on repair product, not a substitute for coating a whole refrigerator.
- For a plastic component: confirm the component’s material and consult the coating label. Krylon Fusion All-In-One lists plastic and metal, but its general-purpose product page does not establish refrigerator-specific durability.
Do not use these recommendations for the liner, food-contact areas, or an unverified plastic part. Rust-Oleum explicitly says not to apply its appliance epoxy inside an appliance.

Manufacturer-documented refrigerator paint options
| Product | Format and stated fit | Useful details | Limits to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rust-Oleum Specialty Appliance Epoxy / Appliance Epoxy Enamel | Liquid brush-on and spray formats for indoor metal appliance exteriors, including refrigerators, according to Rust-Oleum. | Product page shows gloss and satin color options. For the liquid product, Rust-Oleum states that one quart covers 120 square feet with two coats when used on an average refrigerator. This is a manufacturer coverage claim, not an independent measurement. | Exterior use only; not for continuous immersion or surfaces exceeding the stated heat limit. Confirm the current package label and available format, finish, and color. |
| Krylon Appliance Epoxy Spray | Spray paint for aged metal appliances, including refrigerators, according to Krylon. | Krylon’s product page says best results are achieved at 55–75°F with humidity below 60%. | Krylon says not to use it on stoves, ovens, porcelain, ceramics, or exterior fixtures. Check the current label. |
| BEHR PREMIUM Appliance Epoxy Spray Paint | Spray coating whose data sheet specifies exterior metal appliances, including refrigerators. | BEHR advises scuff-sanding glossy surfaces for maximum adhesion. | Verify the current label, available colors, and surface compatibility before purchase. |
| Rust-Oleum Appliance Epoxy Touch-Up Paint | Bottle-brush touch-up product for small exterior repairs on appliances including refrigerators. | Rust-Oleum says to allow it to dry overnight before use; its stated full-dry time is 24 hours under the product’s specified conditions. | Intended for small repairs, not a full-surface repaint. Follow the current label. |
These are the named options supported by manufacturer material here. They are not an independently tested ranking, and product pages or labels may change.
How to choose between appliance epoxy products
Use the label-confirmed details that affect whether the coating suits your refrigerator and project:
Rank #2
- Use to repaint or refurbish interior appliances like refrigerators, laundry machines and more
- Epoxy formula dries to a smooth, hard enamel finish
- Dries enough to be handled in 5-9 hours and covers between 60-120 sq. ft. per can
- Durable epoxy withstands washing and everyday wear
- Creates the look and shine of a smooth epoxy finish
- Substrate and intended use: verify that the product names the exterior material and appliance use. Metal-appliance claims do not automatically cover plastic trim or interior surfaces.
- Format: brush-on liquid, spray, and small-repair touch-up products serve different jobs. Consider masking and application practicality as well as the area you need to cover.
- Finish and color: compare only the colors and sheen currently offered for the specific product and format.
- Preparation and primer: follow the selected product’s own directions. Rust-Oleum says primer is not recommended for its Specialty Appliance Epoxy; do not transfer that instruction to another brand.
- Working conditions and timing: check each product’s temperature and humidity range, coat instructions, drying time, and recoat window. The figures are product-specific.
- Exclusions: check for surfaces and uses the maker rules out, such as heat exposure, porcelain, or appliance interiors.
Prepare the refrigerator exterior
For Rust-Oleum Specialty Appliance Epoxy, the manufacturer’s support instructions call for removing dirt, grease, oil, salt, and chemical contaminants; rinsing with fresh water; and letting the surface dry thoroughly. Remove loose paint and rust with a wire brush or sandpaper, and lightly sand glossy areas. Rust-Oleum says primer is not recommended for this product. Other products may have different preparation instructions, so use their labels instead.
Apply Rust-Oleum Specialty Appliance Epoxy safely
The following conditions and drying figures are Rust-Oleum instructions for its Specialty Appliance Epoxy, not general rules for other paints. Apply between 50–90°F (10–32°C) and below 85% relative humidity. At 70°F (21°C) and 50% relative humidity, Rust-Oleum lists touch-dry time as 2–4 hours, handle-dry time as 5–9 hours, and full-dry time as 24 hours. Its recoat instruction is to recoat within 1 hour or after 24 hours.

For the liquid version, Rust-Oleum states that one quart covers 120 square feet with two coats on an average refrigerator. Treat this as the manufacturer’s coverage claim; actual needs depend on the appliance and application.

Can you paint the inside of a refrigerator?
Do not apply Rust-Oleum Appliance Epoxy inside an appliance: the manufacturer explicitly excludes that use. The products listed here are supported for exterior appliance surfaces, not the liner or food-contact areas. Do not assume an exterior coating is suitable for the inside of a refrigerator unless the coating manufacturer explicitly says so.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about general-purpose paint for plastic?
Krylon Fusion All-In-One is listed for plastic and metal, so it may be a candidate for a confirmed plastic component only after checking its label. The cited product information does not establish refrigerator-specific performance. It should not be treated as equivalent to an appliance epoxy product whose manufacturer names refrigerator or metal-appliance exteriors as an intended use.
