Do Scented Products Create Indoor Air Pollution Like Car Exhaust?

A study links scented wax melts to high indoor nanoparticle counts, but the comparison with diesel exhaust concerns particle numbers—not equivalent pollution or health risk.

One study found that scented wax melts can produce indoor nanoparticle concentrations similar in number to particles from diesel engines and other combustion sources. That is a narrow comparison—not evidence that wax melts create the same overall pollution, chemical mixture, exposure, or health risk as car exhaust.

What the car-exhaust comparison actually means

A 2025 study, “Flame-Free Candles Are Not Pollution-Free: Scented Wax Melts as a Significant Source of Atmospheric Nanoparticles”, reports that scented wax melts release terpenes. Those compounds can react with ozone already present indoors and initiate new particle formation. The study abstract reports concentrations above 106 particles per cubic centimetre and says the particle numbers were comparable to emissions reported for combustion sources including scented candles, gas stoves, diesel engines and natural-gas engines.

This is a comparison of particle-number concentration. Particle number alone does not establish that the particles have the same size distribution, chemical composition, source strength or exposure conditions. The abstract does not establish equivalent inhaled dose, toxicity, or risk of disease. The study authors say further toxicological research is needed.

How scented products can affect indoor air

Secondary particles can form after emission

The wax-melt finding concerns a reaction in indoor air: terpenes from the product meet ozone and form new particles. This is different from simply measuring what comes directly out of a product. The available abstract does not provide enough methodological detail to specify the products tested, room conditions, ozone levels, ventilation, particle sizes or exposure duration.

Products can also emit fragrance VOCs

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases emitted by some fragrance products. In a 2023 study of 60 homes in Ashford, UK, researchers compared three-day air samples from homes using a commercial plug-in diffuser with control homes where it was off. In homes in the lowest quartile of air-exchange rates, diffuser use significantly increased the sum of detectable fragrance VOCs and some individual compounds. Median alpha-pinene in that subgroup rose from 9 to 15 μg/m³. This residential VOC finding is separate from the wax-melt nanoparticle experiment; it does not show that the diffuser produced the same particle levels.

What the evidence does—and does not—say about health

A nationally representative online survey of 1,136 US adults conducted in 2016 found that 34.7% reported health problems, including migraine headaches or respiratory difficulties, when exposed to fragranced products. Those are self-reported responses, not clinical diagnoses or proof that a particular product caused an individual’s symptoms.

The evidence described here does not demonstrate that nanoparticle concentrations from wax melts cause the same health effects as vehicle exhaust, or that the exposures carry equivalent risk. Particle-number similarity cannot answer that question. A health-risk comparison would also need evidence about particle size and chemistry, exposure duration and ventilation, and toxicological effects; the wax-melt abstract does not establish those dimensions.

What other fragrance-product studies found

A 2020 analysis of 12 car air fresheners recorded 546 emitted VOC occurrences representing 275 unique VOC identities; the paper classified 30 VOCs as potentially hazardous. Fewer than 2% of the emitted VOC occurrences—and none of the compounds classified as potentially hazardous—appeared on the sampled products’ labels or safety data sheets. The small sample covered car air fresheners, so its counts should not be generalized to every fragrance product or indoor setting.

Ways to reduce fragrance emissions indoors

Reduce or stop use of the source

Evidence summarized in a 2020 review supports source reduction in specific settings. In a cited study, switching from fragranced to fragrance-free laundry products reduced limonene concentrations emitted from dryer vents by up to 99% within four weeks. In a different cited study, removing or turning off restroom air fresheners reduced indoor fragrance-chemical concentrations by up to 96% within two weeks. These are context-specific reductions in measured fragrance-related compounds, not evidence that all indoor pollutants were eliminated.

“Fragrance-free” does not mean “emissions-free.” The practical implication is to consider whether a scented product is needed and whether using less of it—or stopping its use—reduces the emissions from that source. The evidence summarized here does not establish that an air purifier or consumer air monitor will neutralize the reactions or emissions discussed.

How to read claims that indoor fragrance equals exhaust

When a headline compares a scented product with car exhaust, check what was compared. For the wax-melt study, the supported comparison is particle number concentration. Similarity on that one measure does not show similarity in particle size, chemical composition, exposure duration, ventilation, source strength or toxicological risk. Those comparisons remain unestablished by the study abstract.
