Making it develops practical skills in squaring stock, workholding, layout, alignment and measurement. There is no single required machine or set of dimensions: the right process depends on the drawing, equipment and whether the inner cubes should remain fixed or move freely.
What a Turner’s Cube demonstrates
The finished part looks like several cubes nested within one another, but it begins as a solid block. Machining concentric pockets into its faces removes material while preserving the smaller forms inside. The work calls for more than cutting: the blank must be square, the faces and pocket locations must be referenced consistently, and the remaining walls must survive each setup.
The project is often associated with a lathe, but published examples also use a manual mill, CNC equipment and CAD modeling. The University of Florida Design and Manufacturing Laboratory presents it as a training procedure, while DesignSpark’s 2024 tutorial uses it to explain a CAD design. These are different examples, not a universal specification or mandatory manufacturing route. University of Florida procedure; DesignSpark tutorial.
Choose the geometry before machining
Start with a complete drawing that defines the outer block, pocket widths and depths, wall thicknesses, corner radii, and any required clearances. Concentric pockets determine the nested appearance, but their depth also determines whether the inner forms remain connected or become free-floating. DesignSpark illustrates that choice with a 24 mm cube modeling example; 24 mm is an example dimension, not a general Turner’s Cube standard. DesignSpark’s modeling example.

- Wire EDM Precision You Can Feel: Cut from solid S136 tool steel — a premium Swedish-grade steel used in precision mold-making and cutting tools for its superior corrosion resistance and ability to hold a flawless finish. Four interlocking pieces machined to zero-tolerance fit, meaning no wobble, no slop, no play. The kind of precision that makes engineers and machinists stop mid-conversation to ask how it was made.
- Seriously Heavy for Its Size: At 11.6oz in a 35mm cube, this delivers the dense, substantial feel of a much larger object — solid in the palm, cold to the touch, zero flex. If you already own a tungsten cube or element set, this is the next one. The 4-piece interlocking design gives you something a solid cube never can: the deep satisfaction of disassembling and reassembling precision-machined parts that fit one way and only one way.
- The Gift That Actually Stays on the Desk: Most desk gifts collect dust. This one gets picked up every single time. Ideal for father's day, engineer birthdays, promotions, or anyone who appreciates precision-made objects over mass-produced noise. Ships ready to give — premium box and microfiber cloth included. No assembly required on your end.
- Specifications: 35mm × 35mm × 35mm, 11.6oz, solid S136 tool steel — no plating, no coating, no hollow sections. The 4-piece design adds meaningful complexity over a 2-piece: more satisfying to handle, more impressive to display, and a noticeably harder reassembly challenge. Compact enough for a desk corner, substantial enough to be the first thing guests pick up.
- For People Who Know the Difference: This isn't a Rubik's cube or a spinner. It's a machinist's desk object — the kind of thing that sits next to a good watch or a quality pen and gets noticed. Zero noise, zero batteries, zero gimmicks. Just S136 tool steel and zero-tolerance EDM precision. If you collect things made right, this belongs on your desk.
Do not scale dimensions from a photograph or assume a familiar project size is interchangeable with another drawing. The University of Florida procedure specifies an approximately one-inch starting dimension and tolerances for its own exercise; CNC Cookbook’s example uses a 2.5-inch square block. Each belongs to its respective project, and neither establishes a universal size. University of Florida procedure; CNC Cookbook project guide.
Choose a machining approach
| Approach | Best fit | Setup considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Manual mill | A hands-on exercise emphasizing layout, measurement and controlled machining. | Requires careful squaring and consistent referencing as the block is repositioned. A maker account describes using a manual mill with digital readouts alongside a metalworking lathe. Coffee With Robots project account. |
| Lathe | A lathe-based project when suitable workholding and a repeatable way to locate each face are available. | Workholding and alignment are central; CNC Cookbook discusses a four-jaw chuck for this approach. Follow the machine and chuck instructions for the actual setup. CNC Cookbook project guide. |
| CNC | A project intended to exercise CNC setup and programming, or to machine the pockets from a prepared program. | Still depends on a square blank, reliable workholding, sound datums and a verified toolpath. CNC Cookbook covers both manual and CNC routes. CNC Cookbook project guide. |
Choose based on the learning goal as well as the available machine. A manual route makes layout and handling decisions visible; CNC shifts more of the work into programming and setup, but does not eliminate the need for accurate stock and references.

Plan the work in a controlled sequence
- Match the material and blank to the drawing. The University of Florida exercise uses aluminum stock, but that is its specified material rather than a universal requirement. Select stock dimensions and material to suit the drawing, machine capacity and tooling. University of Florida procedure.
- Prepare and square the blank. Cut stock to the required allowance, deburr it, then face and square it so later measurements and setups refer to dependable faces. Squaring before pocketing is also emphasized in CNC Cookbook’s guidance. CNC Cookbook project guide.
- Establish datums and lay out the pockets. Decide how the part will be located on every setup, then transfer the drawing’s pocket centers and boundaries from those references. Consistent datums help keep pockets centered and aligned across faces.
- Secure the part and machine the faces according to the drawing. Use the workholding appropriate to the selected machine and verify alignment whenever the block is repositioned. Follow the machine-specific instructions for tooling, cutting conditions and setup; these are not universal across materials and machines.
- Deburr and inspect. Remove sharp edges without damaging the thin walls, then check the finished geometry against the drawing, including pocket alignment, remaining wall thickness and the intended movement or connection of the nested cubes.
Safety and inspection matter as much as appearance
Use the machine’s operating and training procedures for the specific equipment, tooling and workholding. The University of Florida training procedure includes setup and safety cautions and states: “NEVER leave the chuck key in the chuck.” Remove the key immediately after tightening or loosening a chuck, and follow the shop’s rules for guarding, chip clearing and measuring near rotating equipment. University of Florida training procedure.
Inspect more than the visual symmetry. A cube can look centered while having uneven walls or inconsistent pocket depth. Use the drawing’s specified tolerances and the measuring tools appropriate to those features; do not substitute the University of Florida exercise’s tolerances for a different design.
