Keep blueberry soil consistently moist, not soggy. Check moisture below the surface, count rainfall toward the plant’s water needs, and adjust how often you irrigate for soil type, weather, and whether the bush is newly planted or established.

How often should you water blueberry bushes?

There is no reliable once-or-twice-a-week schedule for every garden. Blueberries have shallow, fibrous roots, so their root zone can dry quickly; the right timing depends on recent rain, heat, wind, drainage, and plant age. Oregon State University Extension advises keeping the soil moist without allowing water to stand around the plant. Oregon State University Extension: Growing blueberries in your home garden

Newly planted bushes

Water thoroughly after planting, then check frequently and irrigate as needed to keep the root zone moist but not saturated. Oregon State University Extension recommends watering several times per week or as needed while plants establish; University of Minnesota Extension likewise advises frequent, thorough watering after planting. Treat those directions as a cue to monitor the soil, not as a fixed calendar: rain and how quickly your soil drains matter. Pay particular attention during hot, dry, or windy weather. University of Minnesota Extension: Growing blueberries in the home garden

Established bushes

For established home-garden plants, Oregon State University Extension gives a starting range of 1.5 to 3 inches of water per week, from rain and irrigation combined. The amount varies with age, vigor, growth stage, soil, and weather. Sandy soil generally needs more frequent watering than heavier soil because it loses available moisture faster. Check the root zone rather than applying the range as a rigid weekly dose. Oregon State University Extension: Growing blueberries in your home garden

How much water should each irrigation provide?

For established bushes, aim to wet the soil about 0.5 to 1 foot deep at each irrigation, the depth recommended by Oregon State University Extension. Dig a small check into the root zone: the surface can look damp while soil below is dry, or appear dry while the lower root zone still has moisture. The goal is moist soil through the active root area, not a saturated planting hole or standing water.

For perspective, University of Georgia Extension describes mature blueberry bushes using 2 to 3 gallons per day depending on location and weather. That is general production context, not a precise home-garden prescription; do not use it as a fixed amount for every bush. UGA Cooperative Extension: Blueberry Irrigation Water Quality

How to check whether the soil needs water

  1. Check below the surface. Dig into the root zone and feel the soil rather than relying on the surface or a set number of days.
  2. Look for moist, not saturated, soil. If the root zone is drying, water; if water is standing or the soil is waterlogged, do not add more.
  3. Check again after watering. For established plants, confirm that moisture reaches roughly 0.5 to 1 foot deep.
  4. Adjust for conditions. Check more often in sandy soil or during hot, dry, or windy spells; account for rainfall before irrigating.

Moisture sensors such as tensiometers and resistance or dielectric sensors are used in commercial blueberry production, but their readings depend on soil and installation. UGA’s production guidance includes sensor placement and thresholds that should not be treated as universal home-garden settings. Which watering method works best?

Choose a method that delivers water to the root zone and lets you monitor soil moisture. Oregon State University Extension describes drip irrigation as an effective option for conserving water and reducing weed and disease problems. For a row, it describes using two drip lines or starting with one and adding another as plants grow. A soaker hose is another workable choice if you check the soil to confirm it is wetting the root zone.

Overhead sprinklers wet foliage, which can encourage disease. If you use weed-mat mulch, place drip lines beneath it: water may run off the mat before reaching plants, particularly in raised beds. Oregon State University Extension: Growing blueberries in your home garden

Can mulch help blueberry bushes stay moist?

Yes. Organic mulch helps conserve soil moisture, and University of Minnesota Extension says mulch also helps reduce summer soil temperature. Keep checking the soil: mulch slows moisture loss but does not replace irrigation, especially for young bushes or during a prolonged dry spell. What if a blueberry bush looks stressed despite watering?

Do not assume every stressed bush needs more water. Blueberries can suffer from both drought and overly wet soil, and their irrigation water can also be affected by salts and other water-quality characteristics. Check the root zone and drainage first; if the soil is already moist, consider water quality rather than increasing irrigation automatically. UGA Cooperative Extension: Blueberry Irrigation Water Quality

UGA’s 2025 update gives a commercial growing-season benchmark of 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, counting rainfall and irrigation, and reports that moisture monitoring can reduce water use by up to 40% without affecting yield and fruit quality. Those figures describe production guidance, not a guaranteed home-garden result. UGA Cooperative Extension, Georgia Precision Ag: 2025 Annual Blueberry Irrigation Update
