There is no single hydraulic pump size that suits every log splitter. For a new homeowner build, one published guide uses an 11 GPM two-stage pump as a starting example, but the right choice depends on the engine, cylinder, required cycle time and component ratings. If you are replacing a pump, start with the splitter’s manual and original pump specifications—not a general GPM recommendation.
What pump size means for a log splitter
Pump flow, measured in gallons per minute (GPM), primarily affects how quickly oil moves the cylinder and therefore ram speed and cycle time. Splitting force is determined theoretically by cylinder bore area and hydraulic pressure: more flow by itself does not create more force. The Hydraulic Pump Suppliers sizing guide explains these relationships and two-stage pump operation.
A two-stage pump provides higher flow at lower pressure for rapid ram travel, then shifts to lower flow at higher pressure when the wedge meets resistance. Its headline high-flow rating is not the flow it supplies at high pressure. Engine horsepower must be adequate for the pump’s loaded operation, so a larger GPM figure alone does not establish that a pump will work well with your engine.
How to size a pump for a new build
- Record the engine’s horsepower and operating speed. Use the engine’s specifications and compare them with the pump manufacturer’s requirements. Do not select a higher-flow pump without checking whether the engine can drive it under load.
- Record cylinder bore and stroke. Bore determines piston area and theoretical force at a given pressure; bore and stroke together determine how much oil the cylinder needs for a full extension.
- Set a realistic cycle-time target. Estimate the flow needed to move the cylinder volume in your desired time, bearing in mind that a two-stage pump operates at different flow rates during rapid travel and high-pressure splitting.
- Check every component’s ratings. Confirm that the pump, valve, cylinder, hoses and other circuit components are appropriate for the system’s pressure and flow. GPM alone is not a compatibility check.
- Verify mechanical fit before purchase. For a replacement, check rotation (CW or CCW), shaft diameter and key, mounting pattern, and inlet and outlet port sizes. Northern Hydraulics’ two-stage pump guidance identifies these as cross-reference details.

- 5) Widely Used: Suitable for applications such as presses, log cutters, truck snowplows, machine tools, dump trailer lifts, etc
- Piston area: bore² × 0.7854, in square inches.
- Theoretical extension force: pressure (psi) × piston area, in pounds-force.
- Cylinder volume: piston area × stroke (inches) ÷ 231, in gallons.
- Estimated hydraulic horsepower: (GPM × PSI) ÷ (1714 × efficiency). The sizing guide uses 85% efficiency when the manufacturer has not specified another figure.
For illustration, the guide calculates that a 4-inch-bore cylinder at 3,000 psi has a piston area of 12.57 square inches and theoretical extension force of 37,710 pounds-force, or about 18.9 US tons. This is a formula result, not a tested machine output; actual delivered force and cycle time depend on the complete system.
How published examples compare
| Example | Published specifications or recommendation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Homeowner build example | LogSplitBoss recommends an 11 GPM two-stage pump, 6.5–8 hp engine and 4.5-inch bore × 24-inch stroke cylinder; it estimates about a 9-second forward stroke under its assumptions. LogSplitBoss, dated May 19–20, 2026 | A publisher’s illustrative configuration, not a universal or manufacturer-certified recommendation. Verify the engine, pump and circuit specifications for your build. |
| Wallenstein WE235 | The operator’s manual specifies a 5.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine, 20-ton split force, 4-inch-diameter cylinder with 24-inch stroke, 6-second average cycle time, 13-second total cycle time, hydraulic flow below 11 US GPM, and 3,200 psi system relief pressure. Wallenstein WE235 operator’s manual | Specifications apply to the WE235 configuration only. The manual notes that specifications can change without notice and replacement components must have the correct specifications. |
The WE235 manual also lists a 3,000 psi high-pressure hose rating. That hose rating is distinct from the machine’s 3,200 psi system relief pressure; do not treat them as interchangeable values or apply either specification to another splitter.

How to choose a replacement pump
For an existing splitter, identify the exact model and consult its manual for the original pump and hydraulic-system requirements. A replacement must match both the hydraulic requirements and the physical connection: rotation, shaft and key, mounting pattern, and port sizes. Also confirm that its flow and pressure ratings are suitable for the engine, valve, hoses, reservoir and cylinder. The Northern Hydraulics pump guidance can help with cross-referencing, but the machine documentation takes priority over generalized guidance.
An 11 GPM two-stage pump is a reasonable starting example for some homeowner builds, not a rule for all splitters. Wallenstein’s WE235, for instance, is specified for flow below 11 US GPM. Neither example establishes the correct replacement for a different machine.
