How to Shape Shrubs and Bushes for a Well-Designed Landscape

Shape shrubs around their role in the landscape, natural growth and flowering habits—not a one-size-fits-all pruning calendar.

Start by deciding what a shrub should do in your landscape, then choose and prune it to suit that role. A shrub can be a focal point, hedge, ground cover or backdrop; its mature size, natural form, flowering habit and growing conditions should guide how much shaping it needs. Many ornamental shrubs need little or no routine pruning.

Choose a shrub for its role and its site

Shrubs are woody plants with several main stems, often arising near ground level; “bush” is a familiar name for a shrub. They provide lasting structure as well as seasonal flowers, foliage, fragrance, fruit and wildlife value. The Royal Horticultural Society’s shrub-growing guide describes their range of uses, from focal points and backdrops to hedges and ground cover.

Before planting, match the plant to the place and the job. Consider:

  • Landscape role: whether you need a specimen to draw the eye, a screen or boundary, low ground cover, or a background for other planting.
  • Mature size and form: allow for the shrub it will become, not just the size of the plant at purchase. A plant that naturally fits the space is easier to maintain than one that must be cut back heavily to stay there.
  • Growing conditions: check soil, sunlight, rainfall, wind and frost exposure against the plant’s needs.
  • Year-round character: decide whether evergreen or deciduous foliage, flower color, fragrance, fruit, or interest in a particular season matters most.
  • Wildlife value: consider whether flowers, fruit or dense cover will benefit wildlife in your garden.

Local conditions affect which plants thrive. A local garden centre or nursery may be able to advise on shrubs suited to your area; the RHS also outlines the range of shrub characteristics and uses in its growing guide.

Decide what shaping is meant to achieve

Pruning is a tool, not a requirement for every shrub. The RHS notes that many ornamental shrubs and trees can grow without regular pruning. Prune when there is a clear purpose: to remove dead or unsightly growth, control size, improve shape, encourage vigor, maintain health, or support flowers or berries. Some shrubs also have distinctive features, such as colorful stems or large foliage, that selective pruning can highlight. See the RHS introductory guide to pruning.

For a natural-looking planting, begin by letting the shrub keep its characteristic form and remove only what needs attention. The University of New Hampshire Extension explains that plants left in their natural form generally need little pruning, while sheared or unusually trained shapes require more frequent maintenance. It also cautions that heavy pruning to control an oversized shrub can prompt vigorous new branching, making the size problem worse rather than solving it. Choose a plant that fits the available space instead of relying on repeated severe cuts.

Time cuts around the shrub’s flowering habit

There is no single pruning calendar that suits all shrubs. The right timing depends on the species and the result you want; cutting at the wrong time can remove the growth that would have flowered. Check plant-specific guidance before making substantial cuts, and account for differences in local climate.

As examples, RHS guidance for informal flowering hedges recommends pruning forsythia after flowering and lavender immediately after flowering so the hedge can retain its flowers. These are UK recommendations for particular plants, not a universal schedule. The RHS also gives different schedules for formal hedges: box two or three times during the growing season, and holly and beech once in late summer. Consult the RHS hedge-pruning guidance for those examples and check the requirements of the shrub you have.

Use the right tool for the cut and the scale

For individual pruning jobs, basic tools include secateurs and a pruning saw. Bypass secateurs are useful for suitable smaller stems; larger branches may call for loppers or a pruning saw, depending on their size. Use sharp, well-maintained equipment suited to the material you are cutting. The RHS pruning guide and Iowa State University Extension’s guide to pruning equipment describe tool choices for different tasks.

Hedges call for a separate choice based on their size and the growth being cut:

  • Hand shears suit small hedges and soft growth.
  • Powered hedge trimmers may be easier for larger hedges. Options include corded electric, battery-powered and petrol models; the appropriate choice depends on the job and tool capabilities.
  • Individual cuts with secateurs or loppers can give large-leaved evergreen hedges, such as cherry laurel, a neater appearance than shearing, which can leave visibly cut leaf surfaces.

When selecting a hedge tool, consider its weight and reach, whether its blades are single- or double-sided, its power and the stem thickness it can cut. The RHS explains these trade-offs in its guides to trimming a hedge and pruning hedges.

Choose a formal or informal hedge with maintenance in mind

A formal hedge is kept to a defined shape and needs more frequent trimming. An informal hedge is allowed to retain a looser, more natural form and is often a lower-maintenance choice. Let the intended appearance guide both plant selection and the time you are prepared to spend maintaining it; flowering informal hedges also need pruning timed to preserve their blooms. The RHS compares approaches and gives plant-specific examples in its hedge-pruning guide.
