A plunge router earns its place when a cut must begin inside a workpiece, stop at a defined point, or repeat at a controlled depth. Set the depth before cutting, guide the router with a jig or fence suited to the operation, and test the setup on scrap. These ten applications show how to put those strengths to work—from mortises and stopped grooves to circles, inlays, and keyholes.
Set up the router for controlled depth
Before any of these operations, establish the bit’s contact point with the work surface as zero, then set the depth rod and turret for the intended cut. Check the setting on scrap of the same thickness where practical. For a deep cut, work down in stages rather than trying to remove all the material at once. The Bosch 1617/1618 router manual recommends starting with the highest depth-turret step and moving progressively to lower steps until the final depth is reached.
Those adjustments vary by router. On the Bosch RA1166 base documented in that manual, turret steps are 1/8 inch apart; one full turn of the fine adjustment changes depth by 1/32 inch, and each of its four marks represents 1/128 inch. Treat those as specifications for that base, not as standard increments for all plunge routers. Follow your own manual for the sequence of switching on, plunging, locking, feeding, retracting, and switching off; Bosch also instructs users to retract the bit when it is not engaged in the workpiece.
1. Rout mortises for strong joints
A mortising jig—store-bought or shop-made—helps guide repeated cuts and keep their positions consistent. WOOD Magazine’s example uses a 5/8-inch guide bushing with an upcut spiral bit and removes material in 1/4-inch depth increments. Those dimensions describe that particular jig setup, not a universal recipe. If the jig would sit unevenly on the workpiece, the example uses a spacer to support it level.

Plan the mating tenon as part of the joint. Options include a loose tenon, routing a tenon and rounding its corners to match the mortise, or squaring the mortise corners with a chisel. Make a test joint before cutting the finished parts.
2. Use a jig for repeatable dowel holes
The mortising-jig idea can be adapted for dowel joinery by using a jig top with holes instead of a slot. Tops with different hole spacing let you choose the layout for the joint. Register the jig consistently on each mating piece, plunge to the required depth, and verify alignment on scrap or offcuts before drilling the actual parts.
3. Cut interior patterns without tipping the router
A plunge base can lower a bit into a closed pattern from above, which is useful when the cut starts within the workpiece rather than at an edge. Guide the router with a template and either a guide bushing or a top-bearing pattern bit. Confirm that the chosen guide, bit, and template geometry will produce the intended finished size.

- 【Applicable equipment】Use on CNC and other automatic routers, as well as portable and table-mounted routers, such as Bakelite milling machine, engraving machine, deburring machine, table router, hanger milling machine, etc.
- 【Safety Instructions】The universal 1/4 Inch round shank provide greater stability and less vibration during use.Note: When installing on the electric drill, please try to clamp the handle of the Roundover Router Bit to the "K" line(as shown in picture 6), otherwise it will be easy to bend the shank.
Do not assume a collet extension is suitable just because the bit cannot reach. Any extension must be approved for the specific router, collet, bit, and operation, and used within the manufacturer’s limits.

A clamp-on straightedge or a compatible router edge guide can control a straight cut that begins and ends within a board. Add stops at both ends of the router’s travel so the cut length is repeatable. The plunge action lets the bit enter and leave at those set points instead of running in from an edge. Check the setup on scrap to confirm the stops, depth, and guide position.
5. Rout circles with a trammel
A trammel arm pivots around a fixed point to guide the router along a circular path. Match the trammel to the router base and the radius required for the part. Secure the pivot and workpiece, and confirm the bit’s path and clearance before making the cut.

6. Carve signs with guided lettering
Freehand lettering is possible, but it depends on steady, consistent movement. For a more controlled route, use a sign-making system that guides the router with a template bushing. Check that the bushing and cutter suit the lettering template, and practice on scrap before working on the sign face.
7. Rout recesses for inlay
Templates paired with guide bushings or bearing-guided bits can constrain the router’s path for an inlay recess. Some inlay kits provide matching components for cutting the recess and the inlay itself. The fit depends on the relationship between the guide, bit, and template, so test that geometry on scrap before cutting the finished workpiece.

A keyhole bit forms a recess and slot intended to engage a screw head. Match the bit to the screw size and follow its instructions for the cut. WOOD Magazine’s described sequence is to plunge at the back of the workpiece to a preset depth, route a short slot, switch off, then return to the plunge point before lifting the router. Lay out wall-hanging keyholes to meet studs when the installation calls for it.

9. Consider an offset subbase for visibility and alignment
An offset subbase with built-in lights can make the cutting area easier to see; one design described by WOOD Magazine also uses crosshair lasers to help align plunge cuts. This is an optional aid, not a substitute for a guide or a verified setup. Confirm that the subbase is compatible with the router and does not interfere with the operation.
10. Add dust collection where it fits
A clear dust hood connected to a shop vacuum can collect chips and dust near the cut. Choose a hood, hose, and guide that are compatible with the specific router base, and keep the hose clear of the router’s path so it cannot pull the tool off line. Bosch lists certain hoods and guides for particular router models and bases; compatibility should not be assumed across brands or bases.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep plunge action smooth and depth secure
If the router catches or drags while plunging, WOOD Magazine’s maintenance guidance points to dirty guide rods as one possible cause. Clear loose dust and address stubborn particles or rust only with cleaners and lubricants allowed by the router’s manual. If the motor slips in the base and the cut becomes deeper than intended, check the clamp tension screw as directed by the manufacturer. If the plunge lock no longer holds, its locking stud may need cautious adjustment; overtightening can prevent the router from plunging.

Choose guides and accessories for the operation
For a new router or an accessory, compare the features that affect the cuts you plan to make rather than relying on the word “plunge” alone.
- Bit compatibility: Check collet sizes and confirm they accept the bits you need.
- Depth control: Consider plunge depth, turret stops, and fine adjustment for your intended cuts.
- Speed control: Variable speed is a manufacturer-listed feature on some models; match the setting to the bit and operation using the tool’s instructions.
- Guidance: Check availability and fit of edge guides, template adapters, guide bushings, trammels, and jigs.
- Dust collection: Confirm that the hood and vacuum adapter fit the exact router base.
For example, Bosch lists the MRP23EVS with a 15-amp motor, a 10,000–25,000-rpm speed range, 3 inches of plunge depth, 1/4- and 1/2-inch collet capacity, and compatibility with specified guides, templates, and dust accessories. These are manufacturer specifications for that model, not independent comparative test results or a claim that its accessories fit other routers.
