A properly sized air purifier can reduce some airborne smoke particles, but it cannot make secondhand smoke harmless or remove every pollutant. The only way to eliminate exposure is to prevent smoking inside or near homes and other enclosed spaces, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says in its guidance on secondhand tobacco smoke and indoor air quality. For a room where smoke is present, choose a unit by its tobacco-smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR), particle filtration, gas-adsorbing media, filter upkeep and ozone emissionsβnot by a claim that it can βremoveβ smoke completely.
What an air purifier canβand cannotβdo about secondhand smoke
A portable air cleaner can capture some airborne particles while it is running, but it is not a substitute for stopping smoke at its source. EPA states, βNo air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.β Its guidance also says that prohibiting smoking inside or near homes, buildings, vehicles and other enclosed spaces is the only way to eliminate secondhand-smoke exposure and its associated health risks.
Smoke contains both particles and gases. A filter that performs well on particles may not remove gases or odors effectively, so match the filtration approach to what you want the device to capture. Even a well-chosen unit should be viewed as a way to reduce some airborne pollutantsβnot as protection that makes continued exposure safe.
How to size a purifier for the room
Use the unitβs tobacco-smoke CADR as a particle-cleaning comparison, then compare it with the room area. CADR rates particle removal; it does not rate gas or odor removal. EPAβs portable-air-cleaner guidance gives these estimated minimum CADR values for particle removal, assuming an 8-foot ceiling:

These are EPA guidance values, not product rankings or guarantees of exposure prevention. A taller ceiling increases the air volume, and an open floor plan may exceed the area a single unit can serve. In either case, account for the larger space and consider more than one cleaner if needed.
EPA gives a separate rule of thumb on its cleaner-air-room guidance for wildfire smoke: choose a tobacco-smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the roomβs area in square feet, and run the unit continuously at its highest fan setting. That guidance is framed for wildfire smoke; it does not guarantee protection from secondhand tobacco smoke.

What filtration to look for
For airborne particles: a suitable particle filter
HEPA filtration is a common approach for capturing particles. Check the published tobacco-smoke CADR as well as the filter type: the CADR helps show how much particle-cleaning capacity the complete unit provides for a given room, while the filter identifies its particle-capture approach. Confirm that replacement filters are available for the exact model.
For gases and odors: activated carbon or another adsorbent
For gases, EPA recommends looking for activated carbon or another absorbent designed for gas removal. The amount of media matters: EPA cautions that substantial quantities may be needed and does not establish a universal level of gas-removal effectiveness. A thin carbon layer or an βodor controlβ label alone does not establish how well a unit will remove smoke gases.

If you are comparing products, a HEPA air purifier with activated carbon is a relevant category to consider. Evaluate the specific unitβs tobacco-smoke CADR, the amount and design of its gas-adsorbing media, replacement-filter availability and operating guidance; the category name alone does not establish performance.
How to compare candidate units
- Tobacco-smoke CADR: Compare the stated rating with the roomβs area and ceiling height. Do not treat a particle CADR as a gas- or odor-removal rating.
- Filter type and availability: Check what particle filter the unit uses and whether model-matched replacements can be obtained.
- Gas-adsorbing media: Look for activated carbon or another gas-specific absorbent, and assess how much media the unit provides rather than relying on a broad odor claim.
- Usable fan setting: Consider noise alongside cleaning capacity. A high setting only helps as specified if occupants can tolerate running it; EPAβs wildfire-smoke rule calls for continuous operation at the highest setting.
- Upkeep: Check replacement instructions and the cost and availability of the correct filters before buying.
- Ozone: Avoid ozone generators and take care with ionizing technologies, which can produce ozone.
Available EPA guidance supports these selection criteria, but it does not establish a current model-by-model ranking or verify specific productsβ present-day performance, noise or prices. A βbestβ choice therefore depends on the room and the specifications of the particular unit rather than a universal shortlist.

Filter replacement and ozone considerations
Follow the manufacturerβs replacement instructions for the particular purifier. Filter life varies with the device and conditions; a dirty or overloaded filter will not work well. Keep the correct replacement filter available so routine upkeep is practical.
Do not use an ozone generator to address smoke. EPA identifies ozone as a lung irritant and cautions that some air-cleaning technologies, including certain ionizing devices, produce it. Check whether a device uses ionization and look for credible ozone-emission certification rather than assuming every product marketed as an air cleaner is ozone-free. EPAβs wildfire-smoke guidance recommends CARB-certified equipment to limit ozone in that context; certification does not turn a purifier into a way to eliminate secondhand-smoke exposure.

Can a homeβs HVAC system help?
Central HVAC filtration may reduce particles while the system is operating. EPA recommends using a MERV 13 filter, or the highest rating the system can accommodate. A higher-rated filter is not automatically compatible with every system; if you are unsure whether your equipment can handle it, ask a qualified HVAC professional before changing filters.
