To clean a glass-top stove, turn the controls off, follow the appliance manual’s temperature guidance, and use a cleaner and nonabrasive pad approved for ceramic glass. A purpose-made cooktop scraper can help with hardened residue, but scraping directions differ by model. These nine steps combine manufacturer guidance; your stove’s manual takes precedence wherever instructions conflict.
How to clean a glass-top stove in 9 steps

Check the manual and cleaner label
Find the care instructions for your exact cooktop model before choosing a cleaner, pad, or scraper. Follow both the appliance manual and the cleaner’s label. Manufacturer recommendations vary, so a method suitable for one model may not be right for another. Whirlpool and GE both direct owners to model-specific instructions.

Turn all controls off
Make sure every cooktop control is off before cleaning. Whirlpool’s ceramic-glass care instructions begin with this precaution. Whirlpool’s cleaning guide states: “Before cleaning, make sure all controls are off.”

Wait for the temperature specified by your manual
Do not assume every glass cooktop should be scraped or cleaned at the same temperature. Whirlpool says its scraper step works best when the surface is warm but not hot, then calls for letting it cool before applying cleaner. GE describes removing burnt-on residue from a cooled surface, and LG’s cleaning guidance says to ensure the surface has cooled completely. Use your model’s instructions rather than mixing these approaches.

Wipe away loose crumbs and ordinary spills
Use a soft cloth or paper towel to remove loose debris. Avoid rough scrubbers: LG warns that they can damage the surface. If a spill is hardened or stuck, leave it for the appropriate cleaner or scraper step rather than attacking it with an abrasive pad.

Apply a compatible cleaner for routine soil
Use a small amount of a cleaner specifically labeled for ceramic-glass cooktops, on the cool surface when your manual calls for it. GE specifies a few drops of cream cleaner for its described method. Its examples include CeramaBryte and Weiman; Whirlpool names affresh. These are examples, not a universal ranking or approval for every model. Check your manual before using a cream or spray.

Work the cleaner with a suitable pad
Use a cooktop pad or glass-cleaning sponge that the cleaner and appliance instructions allow. Work over the soil with reasonable pressure; do not substitute steel wool or a general-purpose rough scrubber. Whirlpool prohibits steel wool, abrasive powder cleansers, chlorine bleach, rust remover, and ammonia for the ceramic-glass surfaces covered by its care guidance. LG likewise cautions against rough scrubbers.

Scrape hardened residue only with an approved cooktop scraper
For burnt-on food or other stuck residue, use a scraper designed for ceramic-glass cooktops and follow the manual’s directions for surface temperature, blade handling, and angle. Do not use an arbitrary knife or bare razor blade. Whirlpool and LG mention an angle of about 45 degrees in their guidance, while an LG manual for particular models describes about 30 degrees; those differences are a reason to use your own manual, not to choose a universal angle. Sugary spills and melted plastic need special care: GE says to switch off the elements, remove hot pans while wearing an oven mitt, move the spill to a cool area with a scraper, and remove it with paper towels. Do not heat the surface again until residue is gone.

Remove all cleaner and loosened residue
Wipe away the cleaner and debris as directed by your manual. GE warns not to heat the cooktop until the cleaning cream has been removed; LG advises wiping remaining cleaner away with a dry towel. GE’s guidance for high-sugar spills or melted plastic says: “Do not use the surface units again until all residue has been completely removed.”

Buff dry and reassess any remaining marks
Finish with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. If residue remains, repeat the appropriate cleaner or scraper steps rather than reaching for a harsher abrasive. Some marks may not come off: Whirlpool notes that not all stains can be removed, and GE warns that certain discoloration from aluminum or copper cookware boiled dry can be permanent.

Why a clean cooktop can still show marks
Not every visible mark is loose dirt. GE says a metallic sheen or white marks can result from mineral deposits left by evaporated water and food; metal markings can come from cookware sliding across the glass. Some damage is lasting: GE warns that aluminum or copper cookware boiled dry can cause black discoloration that may become permanent, and hardened melted plastic or porcelain can bond to the glass. Avoid aggressive scrubbing when a mark persists, since it may not be removable residue.

Prioritize the appliance manual’s approved products and tools. A cleaner may be a cream or spray, but it should be labeled for ceramic-glass cooktops and used with the pad or sponge its instructions require. Examples named by manufacturers include CeramaBryte and Weiman in GE material, affresh in Whirlpool guidance, and Weiman, CeramaBryte, Hope’s, and Easy-Off 3 in 1 Glass Top Cleaner Spray in an LG manual for model families LCE3610 and LCE3010SB. Those mentions do not establish that each product suits all cooktops.

For tools, distinguish a ceramic-glass cooktop scraper from ordinary razor tools. Use only a scraper your manual permits, and check its grip and blade-control instructions. For pads, choose an explicitly compatible, nonabrasive cooktop pad or glass-cleaning sponge.
