12 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Twelve avoidable kitchen cabinet painting mistakes—from painting over grease to rushing dry time—and how to match preparation and products to the cabinet surface.

Cabinet paint is more likely to peel, show flaws, or stick to doors when cleaning, preparation, product choice, or drying is rushed. The right process depends on whether your cabinets are bare wood, previously painted, stained or clear-coated, laminate, or another material; follow the specific coating system’s label and confirm it is compatible with the surface.

These are twelve avoidable pitfalls—not a claim that every cabinet project or finish needs identical treatment.

Preparation mistakes that undermine adhesion

1. Painting over kitchen grease

Cooking oil and grime can keep paint from bonding properly. Degrease doors, drawer fronts, frames, and edges before sanding or applying a coating, using a cleaner appropriate for the surface. Rinse if the cleaner’s directions require it, then let everything dry thoroughly. Sherwin-Williams emphasizes that surfaces should be clean, dry, and dull for adhesion (Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide).

2. Sanding before cleaning

Sanding a greasy or splattered surface can grind residue into it rather than remove it. Clean food splatter and oil first; sand afterward only as appropriate for the cabinet’s existing finish. The order matters: clean, dry, then prepare the surface according to the coating instructions (Sherwin-Williams paint application FAQ).

3. Assuming every cabinet needs the same sanding

There is no universal sanding rule. Sherwin-Williams advises sanding previously painted cabinets and sanding stained or clear-coated wood to bare wood before using its specified alkyd primer. Its bonding-primer guidance also allows that sanding may not be necessary on some clean, paintable surfaces after an adhesion test. Identify the substrate and finish, then follow the directions for the actual primer and paint you plan to use; do not treat laminate, bare wood, and a sound painted finish as interchangeable (Sherwin-Williams paint application FAQ; Sherwin-Williams PRO Cabinet Refinishing Guide).

4. Skipping an inconspicuous adhesion test

An unfamiliar, slick, or previously coated surface is a poor place to discover a compatibility problem after painting the whole kitchen. Test the proposed primer and coating on a hidden area, following the product’s directions, and check adhesion before proceeding. If the test fails, reassess surface preparation or choose a compatible bonding-primer system rather than relying on extra coats to fix it (Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide; Sherwin-Williams PRO Cabinet Refinishing Guide).

5. Choosing primer without considering the problem

Primer selection should respond to the surface and the reason primer is needed. A bonding primer can promote adhesion to a slick coating; a stain-blocking primer can help prevent tannins or existing stains from bleeding through. These are different jobs, and one primer should not be assumed to solve both. Check compatibility with the cabinet material and topcoat, test an inconspicuous spot, and follow the product system’s label (Sherwin-Williams PRO Cabinet Refinishing Guide; Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide).

6. Painting over holes, dents, and other defects

Paint does not hide every surface flaw. Fill holes and dents with a suitable filler, let it dry, then sand or smooth it as the filler directions require. Inspect the doors and frames before priming so repairs are not left until the finish coat makes them harder to disguise (Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide; Sherwin-Williams PRO Cabinet Refinishing Guide).

7. Leaving sanding dust on the surface

Fine dust and debris trapped under primer or paint can spoil the finish and interfere with coating contact. After sanding, remove dust from the cabinet surfaces and surrounding work area using a method compatible with the product instructions; let any damp-cleaned surface dry before coating (Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide; Sherwin-Williams PRO Cabinet Refinishing Guide).

8. Sanding or scraping old paint without considering lead

Disturbing old paint can create lead-containing dust or fumes. This is especially important in homes where children or pregnant people could be exposed. Before sanding, scraping, or otherwise removing old paint, consult local public-health guidance and use appropriate protection, containment, and cleanup. Sherwin-Williams calls for a properly fitted NIOSH-approved respirator; an ordinary dust mask is not a substitute. In the United States, its guide directs readers to the National Lead Information Center or local health authority (Sherwin-Williams lead and cabinet-painting guidance).

Setup and application mistakes

9. Leaving doors and hardware in place

Painting around installed doors and hardware makes it harder to reach edges and can leave paint on hinges, pulls, or adjacent surfaces. Remove doors and hardware where practical, protect the work area, and keep each door’s hardware organized and labeled so it can be returned to its original location. This also makes it easier to coat door edges evenly (Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide).

10. Using one application method for every surface

Cabinet profiles and broad flat panels call for different handling. Sherwin-Williams recommends an angled brush for details and a mini roller for flat areas. Use tools suited to the coating and surface, and follow the paint label if it specifies an application method; a single tool may not give the best control across both profiles and flats (Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide).

11. Letting drips and brush marks dry in place

Check edges, corners, and detailed profiles while the coat is still workable. Smooth drips or overlapping brush marks gently before the paint sets, using the technique and timing appropriate to the product. Once a defect has dried, trying to brush it out can disturb the film; let it dry and correct it using the manufacturer’s repair and recoating directions instead (Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide).

Drying and reuse mistakes

12. Rushing recoating, reinstallation, or everyday use

Dry-to-touch is not the same as ready for another coat, hardware, or hard kitchen use. Use the selected product’s instructions for each stage: primer, recoating, handling, reinstallation, and cleaning. Manufacturer examples show why one timetable cannot be applied to every system: Sherwin-Williams gives a minimum 24-hour primer-drying interval before sanding and about 24–48 hours between paint coats and before reinstalling hardware in its guidance, while Benjamin Moore advises avoiding heavy abrasion or cleaning for five to seven days. These are product-specific examples, not interchangeable universal cure times (Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide; Benjamin Moore kitchen-cabinet guide).

How to choose a cabinet-painting system

Before buying primer or paint, compare the requirements of your specific project rather than choosing by the word “cabinet” on a label alone. The cited recommendations are manufacturer guidance, not independent comparative tests.

  • Surface: Identify whether the cabinets are bare wood, previously painted, stained or clear-coated, laminate, or another material.
  • Primer function: Decide whether the surface needs adhesion promotion, stain blocking, or both, and verify the selected product system addresses the need.
  • Compatibility: Check that primer, topcoat, and substrate are compatible, and follow the product label for preparation and application.
  • Application: Choose a method you can control on both details and flat panels; the manufacturer guide recommends a brush for details and a mini roller for flats.
  • Schedule: Plan for the specified recoat, handling, reinstallation, and cure periods before starting.

Sherwin-Williams lists cabinet enamel, bonding primer, sanding sheets, an angled brush, a mini roller, and degreaser among the supplies for its project guide. Those are useful categories to consider, not a recommendation that one brand or coating suits every cabinet (Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide).
