For a broken outdoor terracotta planter, Selleys specifically recommends neutral-cure silicone; for a close-fitting break that needs a rigid bond, a waterproof two-part epoxy may be suitable if its current label permits the intended use. Gel super glue is another option for pottery exposed to tougher use. The right choice depends on the break, weather exposure and the exact product instructions—not a universal ranking.
Which glue should you use for a terracotta pot?
Start with the repair and where the pot will be kept. A product marketed as waterproof is not automatically appropriate for every planter: check that its label lists the material and exposure you need, and do not assume a glued pot will be watertight or safe for growing edible plants.

For a large or multi-piece break, do not assume any adhesive makes the pot structural. The cited product guidance does not establish that use. Likewise, none of these sources verifies that a cured adhesive is safe for plant roots or edible crops.
What to check before buying
- Fit and scale: A clean, close-fitting break is different from a chip or a missing section. Confirm whether the product is intended to fill gaps and whether its instructions cover the repair.
- Exposure: Consider rain, watering, sunlight and temperature changes. Look for explicit exterior or weatherproof guidance on the exact product.
- Joint behavior: Decide whether the repair needs a rigid or flexible bond. Bostik cautions that its cited epoxy is not for joints requiring flexibility.
- Appearance and control: Check cured color, applicator precision and how you will manage squeeze-out or hold the pieces. A visible repair may not disappear even when the adhesive cures clear.
- Directions and cure: Product formulas differ in mixing, working time, holding method and full cure. Use the package instructions rather than borrowing another adhesive’s timing.
How to repair a broken terracotta pot
- Clean the broken edges. Remove dirt and dust. If you wash the pieces, rinse away soap residue and dry them thoroughly. Loctite advises clean, dry surfaces; Bostik’s sheet also warns that poor preparation can cause bond failure.
- Dry-fit every piece. Arrange the pieces without adhesive first so you know the order and how they meet. Loctite recommends this check before gluing.
- Read the current product label. Confirm suitable materials and outdoor exposure, then follow instructions for mixing, application, ventilation, holding and cure. Do not rely on an older regional technical sheet as a substitute for current directions.
- Join and support the pieces as directed. Apply the adhesive and use the specified pressure or holding method. Loctite advises light pressure while the bond forms and letting each joint dry before attaching another piece.
- Wait for the stated full cure. Keep the pot unused until the selected adhesive’s directions allow use. The 24-hour full-strength time applies only to the Bostik Super Epoxy described in its cited sheet, not to adhesives generally.
What the available product guidance does—and does not—establish
The recommendations are product- and region-specific: Selleys’ terracotta advice comes from Australia and New Zealand, while Bostik’s cited epoxy sheet is an older South Africa document. Loctite’s guide identifies a gel super glue for pottery under tougher use. These sources do not establish a single winner across all products, a guaranteed watertight repair, structural suitability, or safety around edible crops. Check current local packaging before using any adhesive on a planter.
