If your Samsung refrigerator is frosting up, start by checking for warm, moist air getting in: make sure the doors close fully, inspect the seals, and keep food clear of the vents. If you mean the ice maker is producing unwanted cubes, use the instructions for your exact model to turn it off; frost troubleshooting and ice-maker controls are different issues.
First, identify where the ice is forming
Frost forms when moisture enters the refrigerator and freezes. A door left ajar, a poor seal, hot food, or obstructed airflow can contribute. The location helps narrow down what to check:
- On the refrigerator or freezer walls, near the back, or around vents: look for a door gap, damaged seal, warm items, or blocked airflow.
- Around the ice bucket or dispenser chute: check the bucket seating, its seal, the dispenser flap, and door alignment.
- Near a fan, especially with a scraping or knocking sound: ice may be interfering with the fan. Defrosting can quiet it temporarily, but the cause may need service.
Check the door, seals, and food placement
Make sure nothing blocks the door
Look for drawers, bins, or packages preventing the door from closing. To look for a gap, Samsung suggests placing a flashlight inside the closed compartment and checking whether light escapes around the door.
Inspect and clean the seals
Wipe dirty rubber seals with warm, soapy water and dry them. Check for splits or tears; Samsung advises service for a damaged seal. If a seal has simply pulled out of its channel, push it back into place.

Keep vents clear and let hot food cool
Move food away from the rear vents so air can circulate. Samsung’s US cooling guidance recommends leaving two inches of clearance in front of the vents. Let hot food cool before storing it, and avoid leaving the doors open longer than necessary. If frost has covered a vent, clear it gently; blocked airflow can contribute to overcooling and frost.
If frost is around the ice bucket or chute
Check that the ice bucket is fully seated and that its seal is clean and undamaged. Look at the dispenser flap: it should sit flush and close fully. Ice or debris holding it open can let warm air into the ice-maker compartment. Samsung also notes that a gap between the bucket and chute may be associated with door alignment or leveling.

Do not buy a generic replacement bucket or seal based only on appearance. If a part is damaged, identify the refrigerator’s exact model before sourcing a compatible part or arranging service.
Remove frost without damaging the refrigerator
For light frost, Samsung recommends wiping it away with a damp cloth and drying the area with a second cloth. A thicker patch that can be removed by hand may be loosened gently with a plastic scraper. A scraper is only for accessible frost; it will not resolve a cause that keeps returning.

If buildup is heavy or cannot be cleared by hand, defrost the refrigerator rather than forcing it loose. Samsung warns: “Do not use a hair dryer to speed defrosting. This will damage the refrigerator.” Do not use another heat source either.
When manual defrosting is appropriate
For ice around a fan that is hitting the ice, Samsung says manual defrosting may stop the noise temporarily, but service is needed to correct the underlying cause. Samsung’s US procedure is to remove perishable food and ice, place towels to catch meltwater, unplug the refrigerator, leave the doors open, and let the ice melt. Do not direct heat at the appliance.

Samsung India gives separate manual-defrost instructions for its direct-cool refrigerators. Those instructions are for that product category and market, not a universal procedure for every Samsung model. Check the manual for your exact refrigerator before defrosting or removing parts.

- Frost returns after you have corrected door closure, seal, and airflow problems.
- A door seal is torn or otherwise damaged.
- Ice is building up around a fan or the fan noise returns after defrosting.
- Water is leaking or you suspect the drain is blocked.
Samsung UK’s guidance says a clogged or frozen drainage hole can prevent defrost water from reaching the drain tray and recommends a service inspection. This is UK guidance; it is not a general instruction to clear a drain yourself.

Use the model-specific ice-maker instructions
If the issue is that the ice maker is producing cubes and you want it to stop, check your model’s manual for the correct control or procedure. Samsung reset steps vary by model and ice-maker location. For certain US freezer-door designs, Samsung describes removing the bucket and pressing the test button; if the test does not work, its guide includes a power-cycle step. Follow the guide for your model, and do not repeatedly press Test after the tray fills: water may overflow or ice may jam.
A reset is not a substitute for fixing recurring frost or an air leak. Use Samsung’s instructions for the exact model before resetting the ice maker or removing components.
