But the available sources do not verify that she said raised beds are the “only way” she will grow vegetables from now on. Her example shows why raised beds appeal to many gardeners—not that they are the right choice for every yard or crop.
What Martha Stewart has said and grown
In an interview hosted by ScottsMiracle-Gro, Stewart called raised beds “the box method of vegetable gardening” and described them as an option for terraces, patios, and apartment balconies. She has also maintained an outdoor garden, so her public comments do not establish that she has abandoned in-ground growing. Read the interview.
Her blog documented 16 wooden boxes in her vegetable greenhouse in 2019, then 17 boxes in an October 2025 planting account. In the earlier post, she said the beds improved drainage, helped prevent soil compaction, and kept plants from being trampled. She also noted that a narrow bed can reduce back strain when gardeners can reach across it without stepping on the soil. When a raised bed makes sense
A raised bed gives you more control over the growing medium than planting directly into existing ground. That can be useful when the yard has rocky, heavy-clay, uneven, or otherwise difficult soil, or when a gardener needs a contained growing area. Raised beds are not automatically better. They require a suitable location, a frame or structure, and enough soil and compost to fill it. Existing ground may be the simpler choice if it is workable, well situated, and suits the crops you want to grow. The sources do not establish a universal winner between raised-bed and in-ground gardening.
Plan the site and dimensions before building
Choose sun and water access
Place a vegetable bed where it can receive the light its crops need and where watering is practical. Martha Stewart Living gives 6–8 hours of direct sun as general guidance for many vegetable and herb crops; needs vary by plant and site. See the guide.

Keep the bed within reach
Martha Stewart Living’s general construction guidance recommends a bed at least 8 inches deep and 3–4 feet wide. Treat those as starting points rather than universal dimensions: crop rooting needs, layout, and how far a gardener can comfortably reach all matter. Choose durable materials and suitable fill
Material, design, and fill affect the bed’s durability and cost. Martha Stewart Living’s soil and construction coverage advises avoiding pressure-treated boards and discusses combining raised-bed soil with compost and amendments that improve aeration. Before choosing a kit or building a frame, consider whether it has an open bottom or legs, how long its materials are expected to last, and how much fill the dimensions require. A larger bed can provide more growing area, but it also takes more material and soil to build and fill.

Raised beds can help gardeners manage soil and avoid some problems with difficult ground. They may also warm and dry faster in spring and retain heat longer into fall, according to Carrie Spoonemore, co-creator of Park Seed’s From Seed to Spoon app, quoted by Martha Stewart Living. That seasonal effect does not guarantee a longer harvest in every climate or for every crop.

Stewart has shared examples of a 12-pound broccoli and 17-pound napa cabbages, which she attributed to raised-bed soils she was developing with Miracle-Gro.
