Treat it as informal retail language, not a rating: check the exact temperature claim, how it was established, and the conditions the manufacturer says the bag is designed for. For polar or high-altitude use, two examples are Mountain Equipment’s Glacier Expedition and Iceline, but their published sleep-temperature figures are manufacturer claims—not ISO Comfort ratings or independent comparative test results.
What does “five season sleeping bag” mean?
The phrase does not identify a verified temperature range. The reviewed ISO and manufacturer materials use named temperature ranges or product-specific expedition terminology, but do not establish “five season” as a formal category. A seller may define the term for a particular product; without that definition, it cannot tell you how cold the bag is suitable for.
Instead, read the bag’s actual temperature claim and its label. Find out whether the number is an ISO Comfort or Limit value, a manufacturer’s own sleep-temperature estimate, or another figure. Then check the intended environment and use: a bag made for ordinary winter camping is not automatically appropriate for an extreme-climate expedition.
How to interpret sleeping-bag temperature ratings
What ISO 23537-1:2022 covers
ISO 23537-1:2022 specifies thermal-characteristic, dimensional, mass, testing, and labelling requirements for adult sport and leisure sleeping bags with a limit temperature of at least −20 °C. The International Organization for Standardization says the document “describes a method for the assessment of performance in steady-state conditions of a sleeping bag with regard to the protection against cold.” It does not apply to sleeping bags intended for extreme-climate-zone expeditions. See ISO 23537-1:2022.

Comfort, Limit, and Extreme are not interchangeable
EXPED says its bags are tested by certified laboratories in a climate chamber using a standardized manikin under ISO 23537-1, and describes Comfort, Limit, and Extreme as common temperature ranges. These labels represent different points on a temperature scale; the lowest Extreme figure should not be treated as a comfortable-use promise. Check the definitions and guidance attached to the particular bag and manufacturer. EXPED’s temperature-testing and rating FAQ.
Why some expedition bags have no ISO figures
Mountain Equipment says its expedition bags do not carry ISO Comfort, Limit, or Extreme values because ISO 23537 excludes bags intended for extreme-climate-zone expeditions, or bags with a measured limit colder than −24 °C. Its product-specific Good Night’s Sleep Temperature claims should therefore not be mistaken for ISO ratings.

Two manufacturer-specified bags for extreme cold
These examples illustrate why the claim’s source and basis matter. All specifications below are from Mountain Equipment’s product pages; they are not independent comparative test results. The manufacturer does not display publication years for those pages.
| Model | Manufacturer-stated intended use | Temperature claim and basis | Regular weight | Down specification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mountain Equipment Glacier Expedition | Polar conditions and high-altitude expeditions | −35 °C Good Night’s Sleep Temperature; manufacturer claim, not an ISO Comfort, Limit, or Extreme value | 1,920 g | 1,352 g of minimum 700-fill-power down |
| Mountain Equipment Iceline | Extreme mountaineering and expedition use | −30 °C Good Night’s Sleep Temperature; manufacturer claim, not an ISO Comfort, Limit, or Extreme value | 1,650 g | 994 g of minimum 800-fill-power down |
Mountain Equipment gives the same explanation for omitting ISO Comfort, Limit, and Extreme temperatures for both models: the standard excludes the relevant expedition bags. The two Good Night’s Sleep Temperature claims use the manufacturer’s wording, so do not treat them as standardized measurements directly comparable to an ISO rating.

What to compare before choosing an expedition bag
A low temperature number alone does not establish that a bag fits your trip or your body. Compare the manufacturer’s specifications across the factors that affect suitability:
- Intended conditions: Check whether the manufacturer describes the bag for winter camping, high-altitude climbing, polar conditions, or another specific use.
- Temperature claim and method: Record the exact label and who supplies it. Distinguish a standardized ISO value from a manufacturer’s own sleep-temperature claim.
- Fit and user-size limits: Confirm the available size and maximum user height on the product page. A poor fit can undermine a bag’s practical suitability.
- Weight and insulation: Compare the listed weight for the size you need and the quantity and type of insulation, rather than assuming the warmest claim automatically suits your carrying needs.
- Construction and features: Review the product’s stated design details for the conditions you expect. The examples here do not establish a comparative performance advantage for either model.
What sleeping bag is suitable for extreme cold?
Choose based on the actual expedition conditions and the manufacturer’s intended-use guidance, not on the phrase “five season.” Mountain Equipment describes the Glacier Expedition for polar conditions and high-altitude expeditions, and the Iceline for extreme mountaineering and expedition use. Their respective −35 °C and −30 °C Good Night’s Sleep Temperature claims are manufacturer specifications, not ISO ratings. Whether either is suitable for a particular trip depends on the trip’s conditions and the user’s needs; the figures alone do not establish that decision.
