Wind turbines generate electricity from moving air without burning fuel during operation. They can provide low-emissions power, diversify an electricity supply, and create income and jobs near suitable projects—but the benefits depend on wind quality, grid access, project design, and local impacts.

How wind turbines produce electricity

Wind turns a turbine’s rotor, which drives a generator to produce electricity. The wind itself is renewable and the turbine does not burn fuel while generating. That does not make a wind project impact-free: materials, manufacturing, construction, and end-of-service activities contribute to its lifecycle footprint.

What are the main advantages of wind turbines?

They generate electricity with low lifecycle emissions

Wind turbines produce no combustion emissions at the point of generation. Lifecycle emissions are not zero, but the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), citing a National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) update from September 2021, reports estimates of 11 grams of CO2 per kilowatt-hour for wind, compared with approximately 1,000 grams for coal and 486 grams for natural gas. These are lifecycle estimates, not emissions from turbine operation alone. See the GAO’s 2024 report on wind energy and environmental effects.

They do not consume water during operation

Wind generation does not consume water during operation, unlike coal- and natural-gas-fired generation as described by GAO. This distinction applies to operation, not every stage of building and maintaining a wind project.

They can provide affordable power and diversify supply

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says land-based utility-scale wind can provide low-cost energy, with affordability potentially improving as technology advances. That is not a guarantee that every project is inexpensive: wind quality, construction, maintenance, location, and connection to the grid affect costs. Adding wind also diversifies the sources supplying electricity rather than relying on a single resource.

They can benefit nearby communities

Projects may pay landowners for leases, contribute local tax revenue, and create employment. The amount and distribution depend on the project, agreements, and local arrangements. As a dated U.S. example, GAO reported the American Clean Power Association’s estimate that wind projects made $2 billion in tax and land-lease payments in 2022; this is an attributed estimate for that year, not a guaranteed or current annual total.

They can serve different scales and locations

Utility-scale turbines supply electricity to the grid. Distributed wind systems can serve farms, homes, businesses, public facilities, isolated communities, and microgrids; DOE also describes combining distributed wind with solar and storage. Residential systems may be grid-connected or standalone, but their value depends on site conditions and system design.

Wind is already a substantial part of U.S. electricity generation: DOE WINDExchange reports that land-based wind supplied 10% of U.S. energy generation in 2022, and that 12 states generated more than 20% of their in-state power from wind that year. These are historical U.S. figures, not a statement of current shares or a forecast. See DOE WINDExchange’s overview of wind energy.

What determines whether a wind project is worthwhile?

The advantages are strongest where the wind resource is good and electricity can reach customers reliably. A site with weak or inconsistent winds may not generate enough power to be cost-competitive. Some of the best wind resources are far from population centers, so transmission lines—and the cost and approvals involved in building or upgrading them—can shape whether a project is practical.

Wind output varies because the wind does not blow constantly, and forecasts are imperfect. Grid operators manage that variability through interconnected transmission and a mix of generation sources. A turbine is therefore one part of a power system, not a standalone guarantee of electricity at every moment. DOE outlines these advantages and constraints in Advantages and Challenges of Wind Energy.

What are the tradeoffs and impacts?

Sound and changes to the landscape

Turbines produce sound and alter the visual character of a place. The experience depends on factors such as distance, weather, the site, and local rules; these effects should be considered during project planning rather than treated as identical everywhere.

Wildlife impacts

Effects vary with location and species, and may involve birds and bats on land or marine life offshore. DOE describes measures that can reduce risks, including screening sites, monitoring, curtailing operation at sensitive times, using deterrents, and pausing construction during sensitive periods. These measures are project-specific and do not mean impacts are eliminated. See DOE WINDExchange’s discussion of wind energy, the environment, and wildlife.

Is a small wind turbine practical for a home?

Not automatically. A household considering a small wind turbine should assess wind speeds at the actual site, electricity needs, zoning requirements, system size, and placement before investing. A promising general regional wind map is not a substitute for assessing conditions at the installation site.

DOE cautions that rooftops can expose turbines to turbulent winds and transmit vibration into a building, potentially reducing output and equipment life. In the circumstances it describes, tower-mounted systems are generally more cost-effective. A small turbine may suit a well-assessed rural or remote property, but it is not a universal household solution. DOE’s wind energy FAQ covers small-wind considerations.

How to compare wind options

For a utility-scale project, compare the resource and expected generation alongside transmission access, installation and operating costs, land use, community benefits, wildlife risks, and mitigation plans. For a home or business system, focus on the site’s wind, the intended loads, grid connection or standalone operation, zoning, placement, installation, and maintenance. Comparing those factors makes the difference between a general advantage of wind and a benefit a specific project can realistically deliver.
