Basswood usually refers to American basswood (Tilia americana), also called American linden. It is a large deciduous tree; its pale, light, soft wood is easy to work and especially valued for carving. The wood also goes into products such as boxes, veneer, toys, and furniture stock, while the tree’s fibrous inner bark has been used for rope and woven goods.
What is basswood?
American basswood is a member of the genus Tilia. Common names vary by region: sources may also call it American linden, and “linden” or “lime tree” can refer to related trees. This article focuses on the North American species Tilia americana, not every tree called linden.
How to recognize an American basswood tree
Look for alternate, simple leaves that are broadly heart-shaped, with toothed or jagged edges. The leaf base is often unequal, and the tip forms a short point. These features can help identify the tree, but they are not a complete identification key.
American basswood can grow large. Iowa State University Extension reported a height range of 75 to 130 feet and hardiness zones 3 through 8 in a page last reviewed March 1, 2019. The Government of Ontario reports a possible height of 35 metres; its page does not state a publication date. These are source-specific descriptions, not guarantees for a particular tree or site.

Where does basswood grow?
American basswood grows across parts of eastern and central North America. Iowa State describes habitat including moist upland woods, slopes, protected bluffs, and ravines. Growing conditions and hardiness depend on location, so consult local forestry or extension guidance before choosing a planting site.
What is basswood wood like?
Basswood lumber is very light, soft, pale—described by Iowa State as almost white—and readily worked. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory says it works easily with tools and calls it a “premier carving wood.” That ease of shaping is useful for detail work, but it does not mean the wood performs well in every application.

The Forest Products Laboratory rates basswood as poor at holding nails and at bending, moderate for gluing, and good at holding paint or printing inks. It also describes the heartwood as slightly or nonresistant to decay. Account for those limitations when a project depends on secure fasteners, bent components, or exposure to decay.
What is basswood used for?
Carving and craft work
Because it is soft and easy to shape with tools, basswood is commonly used for hand carving, carvings, decoys, toys, novelties, and other specialty items. Iowa State Extension also describes it as a favorite wood for carvers. Basswood carving blocks or blanks suit projects where easy shaping is the priority; the sources do not establish that it is universally better than other carving woods.

Wood products and manufacturing
Documented uses include lumber, veneer, plywood, pulp, boxes, crates, barrels, furniture stock, caskets, sporting goods, and woodenware. The exact product depends on the material and intended use; its low weight and workability should be balanced against its weaker nail-holding, bending, and decay performance.
Bast fiber
The soft inner bark, called bast, is fibrous. It has been used to make rope and woven products such as baskets, mats, and nets.

Is basswood suitable for a construction project?
Basswood’s strengths are light weight, pale appearance, and ease of cutting and shaping. Those qualities can make it useful for interior craft, carving, or specialty woodwork. The available sources do not establish it as a general-purpose structural or exterior wood: the Forest Products Laboratory reports poor nail holding and bending performance, and heartwood with little decay resistance. For load-bearing, exterior, or heavily fastened work, select material to the project’s engineering and exposure requirements rather than relying on basswood’s workability alone.
