His account shows how blade fit, log handling and the foundation shaped the project—and why it should be read as one prototype’s lessons, not as engineered plans or a safety-validated design.
What Atwood built
In his 2017 Make: account, Atwood describes a horizontal bandsaw mill with three basic systems: the saw, a gantry holding it horizontally, and rails for the saw to travel along. He designed as construction progressed, without CAD drawings or paper sketches.
For his prototype, Atwood calculated pulley sizes around a blade speed of 2,800 feet per minute. That is the design figure he reports for his machine, not a general recommendation for other mills.
What went wrong—and what he revised
The motor
Atwood’s initial 1 HP AC motor overheated while ripping logs and nearly caught fire. In a later revision, he replaced it with a 6.5-horsepower gas engine. Those ratings describe his build and do not establish a motor-sizing rule for other machines.

The blade and guides
Atwood waited until the saw was nearly complete before ordering a blade. The first blade he bought was too narrow for the guides; it wandered, rubbed against the wood and came off. He then researched the options, ordered several blades and found one that worked.
His account does not state the blade’s length, width, tooth pitch, make or model. Anyone selecting a blade for a different mill needs to check dimensions and tooth geometry against that specific machine and its guides; the story does not provide a universal specification.

The rails, foundation and log handling
Atwood made the rails from screwed-together 2×8 lumber. They worked for his prototype, but he thought they might last only one season. Rolling logs onto the rails and screwing them down was slow, and he found that the process damaged the rails.
He envisioned replacing the wooden rails with a welded metal frame and built-in clamps. Looking back, he said: “In fact, if I were to build another mill, I would literally start from the ground up and focus first on log handling and making a solid foundation for the rest of the saw.”

What the prototype milled
Atwood reported cutting an 18-inch-diameter, 6-foot-long spalted maple log into more than a dozen boards measuring 6 inches by 1 inch. This is his account of one milling session, not an independently measured result or an indication of typical output.

Atwood said his saw had “almost zero safety features.” Before cutting another board, he intended to add guards around the blade and drive belt and a push handle. His account does not establish that he completed those changes, that they made the machine safe, or that the design was assessed against applicable safety standards.

Accordingly, the article is a record of a builder’s prototype and revisions—not a set of plans or a validated design to reproduce. Its most useful lessons are about the importance of planning blade compatibility, log restraint and a solid foundation before the machine is complete.
