Peppers that “grow upwards” have fruit that points or is held erect on the plant. That describes fruit orientation—not necessarily the plant’s overall shape—and it varies among pepper types and cultivars. Upright-pointing pods are a normal trait, not by themselves a sign of poor plant health.
What “growing upwards” means for peppers
Fruit orientation and plant architecture are different things. A plant may have an upright growth habit while its fruit direction is unspecified; a pepper with upright fruit has pods that point upward or are held erect. For example, Oregon State Extension describes upright fruit in Capsicum frutescens and contrasts it with the hanging fruit of C. baccatum. The direction depends on the kind or cultivar.
As North Carolina State Extension puts it in its Facing Heaven Pepper profile: “The plant grows upright, and the fruits point upwards.”
Eight peppers with upright-pointing fruit
The evidence is not equally specific for every name below. Five sources explicitly describe the named pepper or cultivar as upright or point-up; the other three are included because Oregon State Extension describes their species group’s fruit as upright.

7. Sedona Sun
Iowa State Extension describes Sedona Sun as having slender, upright fruit that changes from bright yellow to orange.
8. Fresno chile
An Ask Extension response says Fresno grows point-up, unlike jalapeño. Treat this as an extension answer about the variety, not a definitive way to identify an unknown plant: a fruit’s appearance alone may not establish its identity. Choose a labeled seed source if you want to grow Fresno.

How to choose one for your garden
Start with what you want from the plant, then check the named variety’s growing and food-use details. The sources cited here do not provide a consistent set of measurements or a comparative trial across all eight, so they cannot establish a best performer for yield, heat, or fruit size.
- For a culinary pepper with stated heat: Facing Heaven is described as edible and medium-hot; Hot Returns is described as spicy and suitable for ornamental or culinary use.
- For fruit color or appearance: Facing Heaven’s fruit matures red, while Sedona Sun changes from bright yellow to orange. The descriptions of other entries here do not establish a comparable color or size for every variety.
- For an ornamental planting: Hot Returns is specifically described as ornamental/culinary. Verify food-use details for any ornamental pepper before eating it; appearance does not establish flavor, heat, or suitability for cooking.
- For a particular cultivar: Look for a labeled seed packet or plant tag. A general species description supports a likely orientation, but does not prove that every named cultivar or plant will match it.
- For local growing conditions: Check the variety’s requirements against your climate and whether you are growing in a bed or a container. The cited sources do not provide a consistent container comparison across these eight.
Growing conditions that support peppers
Oregon State Extension recommends placing peppers in the warmest area of the garden and using season-extension methods such as row covers or a greenhouse for best production. That is general guidance; adapt it to your local climate and growing season. Facing Heaven’s profile specifically notes sunlight, tropical and humid conditions, and fertile, well-drained soil as preferences.
These recommendations concern growing conditions, not a guarantee that pods will point upward. The direction of the fruit is a variety or species trait; good growing conditions do not turn a hanging-fruited type into an upright-fruited one.
