WOOD Magazine’s Memorial Box Woodworking Plan is for building an urn to hold a loved one’s cremated remains—not a general keepsake box. Its public preview suggests choosing wood with personal meaning, but does not show the plan’s dimensions, cut list, tools, or construction steps. Confirm the full plan’s specifications and the box’s interior capacity before buying materials or starting the build.
What the WOOD plan is—and what its preview tells you
The plan is described as an urn project for cremated remains. WOOD’s plan description says, “Choose wood with significance to the recipient and make the box even more special.” It does not specify a wood species in the public preview. The plan appeared in WOOD Issue 239, May 2016. See the WOOD project listing.
The accessible listing is a short description, not a build article. It does not provide the design’s dimensions, bill of materials, joinery, tools, finish, difficulty, or assembly sequence. Those details must come from the complete plan; they cannot be inferred reliably from another memorial-box design.
Check the plan and fit before building
Before purchasing stock, check the complete plan for its measurements and construction requirements. Most importantly, compare the interior capacity with the intended contents. The public preview does not state dimensions or capacity, so it cannot confirm that the box will fit a particular urn or quantity of remains.

- Confirm the purpose. Decide whether you need an urn for cremated remains, a keepsake box for personal belongings, or a design intended to hold both.
- Get the complete plan. Use it to establish stock sizes, cut list, tools, joinery, finish, and build sequence; none of these are supplied in the public preview.
- Check the fit. Compare the plan’s interior dimensions with the actual urn or items you intend to place inside, allowing for any required wrapping or protective container.
- Choose meaningful wood. WOOD recommends wood with significance to the recipient but does not name a species or stock size. Select material only after checking the plan’s requirements.
Urn plan or keepsake storage?
“Memorial box” can also mean a container for personal belongings. A separate pattern, Wilckens Woodworking’s The Terri Memorial Box (#WW-0567), is designed with two levels: an upper section for an urn and a lower section for mementos and special items. Its stated dimensions are specific to that pattern and should not be attributed to WOOD’s plan.

Compare designs by intended contents, internal capacity, overall footprint, and whether you want one compartment or separate storage levels. The Wilckens dimensions describe only its own pattern; they do not establish the size or suitability of WOOD’s plan.
