From 1 July 2026, eligible households in New South Wales, South Australia and South East Queensland can opt in to three free electricity hours each day under the federal Solar Sharer Offer. It is not a free bill: the offer covers up to 24 kWh used in the region’s set midday window, while the daily supply charge and electricity used at other times remain payable. Rooftop solar is not required.
What does the Solar Sharer Offer make free?
The federal Solar Sharer Offer (SSO) is an optional electricity offer for eligible households in areas covered by the Default Market Offer (DMO). For each day, the first 24 kWh of electricity used during the designated three-hour window is free. The daily supply charge and usage outside that window are still charged; use above the free-use cap is charged at the applicable reasonable-use rate.
So “free electricity” describes a capped period of usage, not a day without electricity costs. How much a household saves depends on how much of its consumption it can move into the window and the plan’s rates and supply charge at other times.
Who is eligible for the federal offer?
The Australian Government says the SSO is available in DMO areas: New South Wales, South Australia and South East Queensland. Eligible customers need a smart meter, must not receive electricity through an embedded network, and must be with a retailer required to offer the SSO. Retailers with more than 1,000 customers in DMO areas must make it available to eligible households. Customers opt in through their retailer; it is not automatic.

Renters and homeowners can qualify. A rooftop solar system is not a requirement. The federal offer is regional, not a nationwide tariff.
What time are the free electricity hours?

The hours are fixed by region, so check which distribution area your property is in rather than assuming the same schedule applies across a state. The cap is a daily allowance, not a monthly pool of free electricity.

Will the free power plan lower your bill?
It can, but it is not guaranteed. The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) says the SSO is an opt-in plan for smart-meter customers, with pricing regulated using the time-of-use DMO price for each distribution zone. Regulation sets a framework for the offer; it does not guarantee that every household will save compared with its current plan.
Before switching, compare the complete offer with your current plan using past bills or smart-meter data if available. Check:

- How much electricity you can realistically use during the fixed free window.
- The usage rates outside that window, including any higher daytime, evening or peak rates.
- The daily supply charge.
- Whether hot water, pool equipment or other controlled-load use is billed separately.
A household whose heaviest use is in the morning or evening may not benefit as much as one that can shift substantial consumption to midday. Do not assume every appliance or household load can be moved just because the free window exists.
How can households shift use into the free window?
The Australian Government suggests scheduling larger loads where it is safe and practical. Possible candidates include heating and cooling, washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashers, EV charging and home-battery charging. Use built-in delay-start settings or smart controls where available, and check appliance instructions before changing operating times.

Timers or smart appliance settings can help, but no purchase is required to access the offer. Built-in controls may be sufficient. If considering an external programmable appliance timer, confirm that it is appropriate for the appliance and its electrical load; do not use a general-purpose timer with high-load equipment unless it is rated for that use. Controlled-load hot water or pool equipment may be metered and billed separately, so check the retailer’s plan details before counting those loads as free-window savings.

The AER’s 2026 figures for residential flat-rate DMO customers show standing-offer prices falling 3.4%–5.0% in NSW and 7.2% in South East Queensland, while rising 1.4% in South Australia compared with the prior year. These are annual changes to flat-rate standing-offer prices, not an estimate of SSO savings for an individual household; time-of-use price changes differ. A household should compare its actual tariff and usage rather than treat these regional movements as a prediction of its bill.

Energy Made Easy and the AER describe 24 kWh as around the average daily electricity use of a five-person household. That is context for the size of the SSO’s daily cap, not a measurement of what a typical participant will use or save.
Does the offer cover Victoria?
Victoria’s Midday Power Saver is a separate state offer, not part of the federal SSO. A Victorian Government announcement in March 2026 said the offer was planned for 1 October 2026 and estimated about 2.6 million Victorian households would be eligible. The announcement said detailed periods and prices would be released in May; it does not establish those final terms here. Victorian households should check current state and retailer information for the applicable hours, eligibility rules and prices rather than applying the federal SSO’s schedule or cap.
