Sometimes. Tap water is most likely to leave mineral residue when used in an ultrasonic or impeller humidifier, which can disperse minerals into the air as visible white dust. For those models, bottled water labeled “distilled” is a lower-mineral option. Evaporative and steam vaporizer humidifiers are not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals, but always check your model’s manual for water requirements.
Why the humidifier type matters
Ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers can disperse minerals from tap water. The minerals may settle as white dust on nearby surfaces or build up as crusty scale inside the unit. How much residue you see depends in part on the minerals in your local water; there is no universal threshold that predicts when tap water will leave visible dust.
Evaporative and steam vaporizer humidifiers are not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that a tested steam vaporizer did not disperse measurable minerals. EPA has not tested evaporative humidifiers for mineral dispersal, so that finding should not be treated as a test result for every model. See the EPA’s humidifier guidance, revised June 2022.
Which water should you use?

For an ultrasonic or impeller model, consider distilled water if you see white dust or want to reduce mineral deposits. In areas with high-mineral tap water, EPA notes that distilled water may cost less over time than cartridges, but there is no universal cost comparison. Check the manual and weigh water cost, convenience, local water, and accessory compatibility.

What white dust and scale tell you
White dust on nearby surfaces is a sign that minerals from the water may be dispersing from an ultrasonic or impeller humidifier. Scale is mineral buildup inside the unit. EPA describes scale as a potential breeding ground for microorganisms, so remove deposits during cleaning rather than letting them accumulate.
The health effects of inhaling humidifier dust are unclear and depend on the types and amounts of minerals in the water, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s humidifier safety document. Dust alone does not establish a particular illness, and the available guidance does not establish that it is harmless.

Daily use and cleaning
- Daily: Unplug the portable humidifier, empty its tank, wipe surfaces dry, and refill it with fresh water.
- Every third day: Clean the humidifier, removing scale, deposits, and film. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions. If the manual does not specify a cleaning product, EPA describes using a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution on water-contact surfaces, followed by thorough rinsing with several changes of tap water.
- During operation: Keep indoor relative humidity at or below 50%. A hygrometer can help you monitor it. Reduce output or use the humidifier intermittently if the surrounding area becomes damp or wet.
- For filters and storage: Follow the manual for cleaning or replacing filters, cartridges, and other materials. Before seasonal storage, empty and dry the unit; clean it again before using it next season.
Stop using the humidifier and contact a physician if respiratory symptoms seem connected to its use, even when you have followed maintenance directions.
