7 Things You Can Clean With Rubbing Alcohol—and What to Check First

Rubbing alcohol can clean some mirrors, bathroom surfaces, kitchen grease and small items, but product labels and device-maker instructions determine whether it is safe for a particular surface.

Rubbing alcohol can clean a limited set of household surfaces and small items, but it is not safe for every finish or device. A DailyMed-listed 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol product names mirrors, bathroom surfaces and kitchen grease; Poison Control also describes uses for thermometers, keyboards and phones. Those examples are not blanket approval for every product or material. The available guidance supports seven examples—not nine independently verified, broadly safe uses—so this list stays within what the sources establish.

First, know what “clean” means

Cleaning removes dirt and impurities; it does not automatically disinfect. The CDC says, “In most situations, cleaning alone with soap and water can remove most germs, such as harmful viruses or bacteria, on surfaces.” Disinfection at home is generally needed when someone is sick or at elevated risk, and when it is called for, clean the surface before disinfecting it. CDC, Cleaning and Disinfecting

Rubbing alcohol is commonly sold as 70% isopropyl alcohol, but the right product and method depend on the surface. Use the product label and the surface or device maker’s care instructions. A use listed on one bottle does not establish compatibility with every brand, finish or material.

7 things you can clean with rubbing alcohol, with qualifications

1. Mirrors

A specific 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol product label lists mirrors as a cleaning use. Follow that product’s directions and check whether the mirror has a coating or finish that requires different care. See the DailyMed product label

  • Packaging is transitioning and may vary from picture
  • First aid to help prevent risk of infection from minor cuts, scrapes and burns

2. Bathroom surfaces

The same label names bathroom surfaces. That does not establish that alcohol is suitable for every tile, sealant, fixture or finish; follow the surface maker’s guidance and the bottle directions.

3. Kitchen grease

The label also names kitchen grease. This is not a general recommendation for every countertop, appliance finish or food-contact surface. Check the product label and the surface manufacturer’s care instructions before using it.

Poison Control includes thermometers among small household items for which rubbing alcohol may be used. Check the thermometer manufacturer’s instructions for the appropriate cleaning method and any restrictions. Poison Control: No, you can’t drink rubbing alcohol

5. Computer keyboards

Poison Control lists computer keyboards as an example, but CDC advises following the electronics manufacturer’s directions. Use only a permitted method, and do not pour or spray liquid into openings. CDC household cleaning guidance

6. Phones

Poison Control also lists phones, but device makers’ instructions take priority. Check the current guidance for your specific phone before applying alcohol; a recommendation for one model or product is not proof that another phone’s screen or finish is compatible.

7. Touch screens, only as a conditional fallback

An archived CDC household PDF says alcohol-based wipes or sprays containing at least 70% alcohol may be used on touch screens when manufacturer guidance is unavailable, and cautions against allowing liquid to pool. Because device coatings differ and the guidance is archived, use current manufacturer instructions whenever available. CDC archived household guidance

When rubbing alcohol is the wrong choice

Alcohol can harm some materials. CDC’s chemical-disinfectant guidance notes that it can damage shellac mountings on lensed instruments; prolonged or repeated use can swell or harden rubber and certain plastic tubing, and bleach rubber or plastic tiles. These examples are warnings, not a complete compatibility list. Avoid assuming that alcohol is suitable for wood, leather, upholstery, painted finishes or other materials without specific reliable guidance.

Alcohols are flammable and evaporate rapidly. Poison Control warns that rubbing alcohol is toxic if swallowed. Keep it away from flames and other ignition sources, ventilate the area, and store it out of children’s reach. Follow the product label, do not mix cleaning chemicals, and choose a purpose-made cleaner or registered disinfectant labeled for the specific surface and purpose if its maker’s instructions rule out alcohol. Why a higher percentage is not a universal fix

CDC’s chemical-disinfectant page presents a 60%–90% volume/volume range as the optimum bactericidal concentration range for alcohol solutions in water in a healthcare disinfection context. It is not a household cleaning success rate or a universal instruction for these tasks. Choose a consumer product according to its label and the surface maker’s directions rather than treating concentration alone as proof of safety or effectiveness.
