Yes—two flat sheets can become a duvet cover if they provide enough fabric for your duvet insert and the seams, hems, and opening. Measure the insert first, check the sheets against your planned layout, then join three edges and finish the fourth with a closure you can open for laundering.
What you need
- Two flat sheets with enough usable fabric for the cover panels
- A measuring tape, fabric scissors, pins or clips, matching thread, and a sewing machine
- A closure such as buttons, snaps, a zipper, gripper tape, or an envelope-style flap
- Optional: short ribbon strips for ties at the insert’s corners
Pre-wash and dry the sheets according to their care labels, then press them flat. Pre-washing can reduce the chance that later shrinkage changes the fit. Check that both sheets are in sound condition and that their care requirements are compatible.
Measure the insert and check the sheet layout
- Measure the duvet insert’s length and width while it lies flat. Use those measurements rather than relying on a twin, queen, or king label; nominal sizes and actual dimensions vary.
- Choose a finished cover size. It should accommodate the insert without assuming that the insert will fit simply because the sheets carry the same bed-size label.
- Decide whether to use two separate panels or one sheet folded along a long edge. Lay out the sheets before cutting and account for seam allowances on joined edges and hem allowances at the opening.
- Check that the usable fabric covers the planned layout in both dimensions. If it does not, consider adding a panel or using larger sheets. Do not cut until the full layout and allowances fit.
For one published two-piece layout, Sewing.org specifies adding 2 5/8 inches to the insert length for hems, doubling that measurement for the two-piece layout, and adding 1 1/4 inches to the width for seams. Those allowances apply to that guide’s construction method, not every layout. If you use a different method, calculate allowances for its actual seams and hems and apply them consistently.
Sew the cover
- Place the panels with their right sides facing each other. Align the edges and pin or clip them together.
- If you want corner ties, position short ribbon strips inside the cover at the insert’s corners before sewing. Secure each strip in the seam so its free end will be inside the finished cover.
- Sew along both sides and the top edge, leaving the insertion end open. A sheet-specific tutorial uses a seam about 1/2 inch from the edge; choose a consistent seam allowance that fits your layout and leave enough fabric to finish raw edges.
- Finish the raw edges with a zigzag stitch or serging to help limit fraying.
- Hem or otherwise finish the open edge, then turn the cover right side out and press it. Attach the closure you selected.
Choose a closure for the open end

These options involve different sewing and installation steps. The cited tutorials do not provide comparative durability tests, so they do not establish that one closure is strongest or easiest overall.

No-sew alternative
A no-sew version bonds three edges of the two sheets with fabric or iron-on hem tape, then uses a separate closure at the insertion end. Follow the tape maker’s instructions for application and care, and use Velcro or snaps if appropriate. Safety pins or binder clips may help hold the sheets in position while you work, but they are not a substitute for a finished closure. The cited guide does not report wash testing or long-term seam performance for tape-bonded covers, so durability through repeated laundering is not established.
